Err, not sure what to make of this show....

I'm not sure if I am watching HBO or the Spice channel. HBO certainly seem to be pushing the limits to sexual exposure on "regular" TV.

So far I have only seen a 1/2 hour of it and at present I am not sure if I can be bothered for episode 2. The first 10 minutes bored the heck out of me, but it started to develop (along with the sex.!!). Still I am not keen on the fly-on-the-wall documentary nature of the filming.

For now, I'll try the second episode as with HBO you have to give them time, but still its not exactly riveting at present.

I loved the TiVo scene...do you think they paid for that product placement?

I liked it. Each couple has some interesting dynamics. If you've been married long enough (25+ yrs for me), then you've probably been thru a least a couple of those phases. :o

About halfway thru, I was thinking the same thing, how slow it was, and whether I would keep watching. By the end, I was hooked. The last half brought it to life. I guess they had to lay a little groundwork to put everything in place.

Was that Penny Widmore (LOST) ?

+1 on the TiVo scene

Yep, I can certainly relate to some of the scenes in this show. We had trouble conceiving our second child, so the very unromantic scene with the woman stating that she was ovulating and that the guy (the sperm factory) should f*** her there and then brought back a few memories... :D

Still I find the show a little sterile and I can not warm to any of the characters at present. Still that sounds like a HBO show these days...

Yeah. This show is graphic. I don't relate to any of the couples but it makes me feel good watching since I think all three couples are BEYOND crazy. 1 couple the guy can't commit to not cheating to his girlfriend. Smart guy. 2nd couple stopped having sex and raising kids looks fun. :) Then factor in the guy refuses to have any meaningful discussion when the wife brings it up. Nice move buddy. The last couple go to therapy and lie. Real productive. People are nuts. :)

I thought it was pretty slow. But I'll give it a few more shots.

I thought the two sex scenes were a bit gratuitous... and I'm not the least bit prudish! Just looked like they were showing it for buzz-factor.

yeah, and she was the wife on another HBO show "Dream On" if memory serves.

show was slow for sure, we'll give it a few more episodes to see if it goes anywhere, but so far not overly impressed..

Tim Goodman in his column said this was not going to be a happy happy feel good show. If things follow this pattern I can see why.

I'll keep a season pass going, even though I think the four couple all at different relationship stagees is a bit too transparent a plot device. I think the couple that lied to the therapist is heading for the most trouble.

Much as I might otherwise enjoy a little gratuitous sex and nudity, I was bored nearly to tears by these characters and, especially, the dialogue. As several have said, because it's HBO I will give it another episode or two to see where it goes. So far, though, I don't see anything here.

If you have the On Demand service, it appears HBO is airing episodes of this one starting on Monday before it airs the next Sunday, so I've already watched ep 2 - not really anything to say that would spoil anything for anyone, and I'll probably continue watching for another episode; not really anything here compelling to watch. Storyline is non-existent to meh.

My wife's sentiment is the same as mine: real life is stressful enough that we're not interested in a show about someone else's relationship issues. Maybe it's interesting, but I personally enjoy a little escapism.

I'm going to be skipping this one, and sticking with Real Time with Bill Maher and Curb Your Enthusisam until HBO gets another interesting drama that isn't so depressing and melodramatic.

TVGuide.com says this pulled in 900k, much lower than 3.x million that were estimated.

This show might not last too long...

If this was network TV it would have already been pulled.

But this is HBO... do they ever cancel shows?

Well, The Wire is pretty depressing. Not melodramatic, though.

Almost no one talks about Dream On. What ever happened to the guy who was the star of that show? He pretty much fell off the face of the earth.

Well, The Wire is pretty depressing. Not melodramatic, though.Yep! The OP asked for (a) interesting AND NOT ((b) depressing AND (c) melodramatic). The Wire satisfies because exactly as you point out, it's not melodramatic so we have: (a) true AND NOT ((b) false AND (c) true), which is true AND NOT false, which is true!!

I know you knew that, I'm just in a logical mood :p

I seriously liked this. Some of the best writing I've see on TV in a while. I think all married couples can relate to some of these characters.

Watchable. When I'm in the mood.

Will not be surprised if HBO don't renew for a second year.

Nice try at something different

No. HBO never cancels shows. They will not renew a show (see JFC), but they never drop a show in midstream, and then tell you to watch the remainder online (see Pirate Master CBS).

Networks wonder why they are losing viewers by the gazillions. It's their cavalier attitude towards us. How many people won't watch a show because it may get bumped after just 2-3 showings? Hot shows get eyeballs. Borderline shows can be scary to commit to. That's where a TiVo works wonders--record a few eps of any show remotely interesting, and if it catches on, watch it. If it gets whacked, delete 'em.

I liked it, I've been with the same woman for over 17 years and can definitely relate to the different phases of a relationship.

The sex was interesting, glad to finally see Sonya Walger do a nude scene.

I read they are using a "detachable penis" for the male nude scenes, I think if I were an actor on the the show I would tip the prop master. :)

For a brief moment I thought Hugh Hefner was playing the therapists husband, that would have been kind of funny.

I thought this was starting later in Sept, so I missed the premiere.

I had a wishlist, but non recording, and neglected checking it.

SP set, and it looks like I'll be getting a replay of this before the 2nd episode.

Then I can go back and read the thread instead of jumping to the end to post.

Propmaster = L. Bobbitt? :eek:

I don't understand why a real penis shouldn't be shown, but a fake penis is okay. If it has to do with "offending sensitive viewers", with a show like this, I just don't get it.

Same goes for the "c**k sock". That's just ridiculous. Especially when it accidentally appears on camera.

I suspect it has more to do with what the actors are comfortable doing.
