Hey, does anyone remember when a commercial would come on for an upcoming TV show and suddenly the TiVo "thumbs up" logo would appear? You could push "select" (I think...maybe "thumbs up" ) on the remote and it would instantly take you to the screen to record the show, set an SP, etc.? Whatever happened to those? I liked them. If you paid attention you could even see them while FF through the commercials.
They still do that with some of the downloaded preview material, but I haven't seen it on "real" TV for ages. Or am I having one of those unfortunate flashback’s that aren't quite based on reality? ;)

Wow, you've been a member of this forum for three years and have no clue about how often that phrase is used in this place?
and of course you don't find much to watch on FOX, they cancel all of their good shows before they've had a chance. Hence the popularity of that phrase.

Maybe it's because I'm new but I thought that this thread was going to launch into a campaign to get TiVo to increase advertisement on television on it's own product. The "masses" out there who think they have a TiVo but what they have a piece of crap cable company issued DVR need to be informed as to exactly how much better TiVo is then what they are currently using.
Now I'm not an ad man (or Mad Man as AMC puts it) but I think an entertaining and informative ad about the differences would be beneficial to TiVo.

I can see how just looking at the title coupled with the fact* that you don't see that many Tivo TV ads would give you this impression.
*I can't even recall if I've EVER seen a Tivo TV ad (on TV, that is. I have seen "commercials" that were linked to from this forum).

I would actually like ads every minute during the shows I watch... and there should be products placed within every scene--e.g., of CSI--with flashing TiVo logos superimposed. Press the select button and you get to watch the ad... watch 10 or more during a show and they'll reduce your monthly fee by 25 cents.
Oh, to make it even better, the shows should be interrupted with commercials that last, say 2-3 minutes, and commercial skip should be disabled. We could all enjoy the nostalgia of watching live TV a la 1970s. What fun! :)

I'd rather see ads than to see their service rates go up, and I'm still paying the same service rates that I began paying when I got my first TiVo's over four years ago now; granted, we have to sign up for a 3-year commitment now to get those same rates, but those same rates are still available, and I hope and plan to continue using TiVo for many years to come anyway, well over 3 years.
___
As far as the FOX discussion, I agree that FOX appears to be the network to cancel new shows the quickest.
However, there are currently four programs on FOX that I watch regularly that are doing well on FOX, and three new series (two this fall, and one for mid-season) that I'm looking forward to, and am hoping they end up being as good as they sound, and am hoping they don't get the ax too quickly if I do end up liking them.

Actually, I know you were joking, but Time Warner does offer a DVR that does this (or doesn't do this, I guess). The fast forward button is disabled. And all your recorded programs automatically delete themselves after 24 hours. It is free (as in no monthly fee or upfront cost).
As far as Tivo, I could care less about the yellow star ads. They can have as many as they want. It's the ads shown during playback that I don't like.

This is either the most sarcastic thread in the history of the internet, or there are many many Tivo stockholders here - terrified that Tivo is losing money and will soon die.
Regardless, how any sane person would WANT their user interface marred by corporate sludge shows exactly how insane many people are around here. Amazingly unsophisticated in their desire for technological elegance. There is no other way to say it - if you want more ads, you're a fool. Personally, I enjoy a slick, CLEAN user interface.

Well, it's a trade-off. If one more yellow star results in a $5/month price drop, most people would accept that. If there are 20 more yellow stars that only result in a $0.20 price drop, people won't accept that.

I've been a very happy Tivo owner since early 2000. I can't imagine TV without it.
A few lines on the main screen don't bother me in the slightest. I don't even consider them ads.
What I do is play them all when I'm not watching so Tivo gets the credit for it.
I WANT Tivo as a company to continue to exist, and ads not only help keep our rates down, but also gives them revenue.

Whatever ads are there aren't bothering me, as long as I can watch shows unimpeded and whenever I want, I say bring them on.
I also pay monthly service instead of pre-paying because I figure that does my slight part to keep Tivo afloat.

My view is, as a lifetime Tivo owner, I can tolerate the ads because I don't have to pay monthly fees.

I believe this is the hidden potential of TiVo that could turn TiVo into a Google. They now our location, and they know our tv watching interest's. Harness that with some specific advertising from local companies. Now thats powerful advertising.

So your sane because your infuriated by one line of text? It's not like these are pop up ads that get in the way of watching your shows. When you agreed to pay for TiVo service no where did it say that TiVo will not advertise on your box. Advertising is a revenue stream for TiVo and the only reason they should give it up is if people are willing to pay more for no ads or if people aren't willing to buy the product because of the ads. Do I like advertising? For the most part no, but if its for a product that I would like to be informed about or if its entertaining, then I don't mind them. Think about it, if TiVo makes 1 million from ads getting rid of them means they need to make that money some other way and the only other revenue stream for TiVo is us. Vote with your wallet instead of coming on here and bitching. If you don't like TiVo's business model then don't by their product. If enough people feel the same way as you (judging from the responses in this thread they don't) then Tivo will change their business model.

I have always felt that Tivo should sell this type of advertising on the "pay-per-click" model. They would get revenue everytime someone clicked on the ad.
As long as the one-line ads don't steal real-estate that could be better used, and aren't obtrusive I see no problem with them.
Personally, I rarely see them since I click twice on the Tivo button and twice on the Page Up button while my TV is still warming up. By the time I have a picture I am at the Now Playing screen with the most recent addition highlighted.
If I want to set a recording I click Tivo, Scroll Down twice and enter and I barely see the Main Menu flash on the screen.

I have no fundamental objection to advertising, and, in fact, I *like* receiving some ads - I signed up for some categories in Product Watch for example, and I'm sorry that it seems to be dormant, if not dead. What I don't like are pointless ads - I'm a 36 year old male and I live alone. I don't give a damn about 'feminine hygiene products', children's products, products for the elderly, etc. But I do like movies, and I'm all for movie promos and previews being loaded on my TiVo for me to check out - and those are ads. I'm into technology and gadgets, and if you want to show me ads for a new smartphone, etc, I'll probably watch it. I like music and I'd be game for ads for new release albums, especially if I could listen to some of the tracks and then buy it if I like it.
The point is, I'd be all for more ads - if they were well targeted. Let me select categories, and then even 'rate' ads so it can learn what I like just as TiVo Suggestions does. In fact, you could start by developing a profile based on what people watch. I watch a lot of SciFi and science and technology shows - you could deduce I'm probably a good candidate for gadget ads and promos for new scifi movies, etc.
I don't have a problem with the types of ads TiVo currently has in their interface. Sometimes I watch them, sometimes I don't. I have no interest in American Express, but when they have movie promos I tend to check it out. I don't watch football, so NFL ads get ignored - but info on new cars I'll check out. (Cars are like big gadgets.) I don't find it intrusive to have a simple menu item that I can take or leave as I choose. I would not be willing to pay more to avoid those ads.
I do think it could be taken too far - flashy banner ads or 'interstitials' would get annoying. Forcing users to watch video ads, like some DVDs, would be unacceptable. But TiVo has been good at staying on the right side of the line to avoid driving away the majority of users.
