Having a problem upgrading....

I am upgrading a lifetime sub TCD24004A from a 40 hour drive to a 500gb drive. I bought a brand new WD 500gb drive and downloaded the ISO to boot to and all seems ok - it appears to identify both drives but when I type in

mfsbackup -f 9999 -1so /mnt/backup.bak /dev/hdb
it says

Scanning Source Drive. Please wait a moment.
Source Drive is 39 Hours
Backup Image will be 39 hours.
Uncompressed backup size: 812 megabytes
Backup failed: /mnt/backup.bak: Success

It gets to about 4% before the last line - what am I doing wrong? I am hoping you guys can help...

are you going to a FAT32 partition to make your backup? I got this same exact message when I accidentally created my partition as 300MB and not 3 gig like i intended. I was befuddled because the error message says both 'Backup failed' and Success. After I thought about it, i recreated my FAT32 partition to 3gig, tried again and everything worked fine.

First, some of the upgrade tools are old and do not work well with drives larger then 137G. I strongly suggest you use the new MFSLive CD (http://www.mfslive.org/) and instructions (http://www.mfslive.org/cgen.php)

The command you posted is for making a backup without recordings as a file. To do this you need to mount a FAT, FAT32 or Linux partition that Linux can write the small 200-500M backup file to.


It is always a good idea to make a backup, if the original drive is sound you could just put that away as the backup instead of making a file.

If your computer is NT, XP or Vista the format of your PC's drive is probably NTFS and Linux will mount that Read Only by default. I would create a small FAT32 partition (1 to 2G should do) on the new 500G drive with windows and use that drive to transfer the backup file to the Windows drive or CD.

Can one of you guys talk me through creating a fat32 partition on my 500gig? This makes sense - since it would need to store the backup somewhere aside from iteself....

I am running windows xp but to do this I removed all drives and only have the dvd rom, tivo drive and new drive (which all I did was open the package and connect....I have to run out but will make another attempt tonight after I see what you posted - thanks a ton!

There's WinMFS so you can upgrade directly from windows.

Can one of you guys talk me through creating a fat32 partition on my 500gig? Restore PC's configuration back to normal except with the new 500G drive added (TiVo drive removed). Create a FAT32 Partition or Logical Drive (Microsoft.com) (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310525) FAT32 will only be offered for smaller partitions so set the size to be a couple of Gig's.

Is their a kernel limitation to disc size on the standard series2 kernel? Does it support version 1 swap partitions? Can NFS support be added like on the modified S1 kernels?
