Networking Tivo Question

Not sure if my question is posted in the correct forum? Please move or advise and I'll delete / repost in correct forum.

Currently, I have one Tivo S2 networked wireless (Bedroom1) I'm planning to purchase a new TivoHD and add it to my home network (Family Room). The room I want the TivoHD connected has a Cat5 connection in place but it is currently being used by a Xbox360. I want to keep the Xbox connected for Xbox live, etc. What is the best way to share this Cat5 connection without interfering w/ the Xbox360? Is another wireless adapter for the TivoHD my only option?

You need a small (4-5 port) Ethernet switch. Most network equipment manufactures make one.

Get a Networking Switch as atmuscarella has mentioned.

Connect the Cat5 Cable that you have running to the Xbox360 into the Switch, then run a Seperate ethernet Cable to the Xbox. You would also run another Cat5 cable from the Switch to the TivoHD.

At the current time, the Series 3 or TivoHD does not support Home Networking. There is no TTG or MRV as the Series 2 has. These features are supposed to be working soon.

The switch works but is a bit of overkill. You could also just use a dumb HUB for such a use and save some bucks. I think you can find a 4 port HUB for 10$ now a days. Netgear made a great little compact one in a metal case that was great in my travelling consultant days :up:

PS - just to be clear - the S3 and TiVoHD will network just like the DT model and you can get guide data, TiVoCast and UNBOX downloads as well as share pictures amd music from a PC Currently MRV/TTG is the only thing not enabled in this category on the S3 and TiVo HD

The S3 and THD support many home networking features including internet guide updates, internet recording scheduling, Amazon movie rental/purchase downloads, music/picture sharing etc etc etc.

Yes, MRV and TTG are currently disabled, but don't say that they dont support home networking.

Since everyone loves to be picky nowdays:

A Switch is not an overkill. Hubs are a thing of the past, move on.....

In Fact, you can purchase New Switches cheaper now than the equivilant Hub.

Yes, a Hub will work, but since a Switch or Hub is a key component of a Home Network, why not have something that works alot better.

A Hub can only communicate with One Device at a Time, and the data can only be sent One Way at a time. Two many PC's or Tivo's connected to a Network using Hubs drastically slows the entire Netwrok down.

A Switch can communicate with many PC's/Tivos etc at the same time, and sends Data to all connected at the same time, not qued up as with the Hub.
