NETGEAR WG111 USB wireless for Series 2 question.

Just trying to confirm some information I saw in the TIVO customer support section.

It says:

"NETGEAR WG111, WG111NA, or WG111RVNA Only adapters starting with serial numbers WG72 or 130 are compatible. TiVo Software Version 7.1 or later required."

I was just at Best Buy, and the NETGEAR WG111 have serial numbers of 13Cxxxxxx. I'm just wondering if serial numbers of 130 AND ABOVE might be compatiable or is it strictly serial numbers that start with 130 and anything above that will NOT work ...

This statement is not vague or misleading. It says what it means to say.

It says what it means if it is a current piece of doc ... If you have been in the software buisness for as long as I have, you know that doc isn't accurate all the time (or even most of the time when it comes to model #'s and the like that can change over time).

So, hence my question ... If you work for Tivo, or have tried the newer model #'s then thank you for the confirmation :)

Although you obviously don't want to hear that the Netgear adapter you're asking about is not compatible, please see my first response for the correct up to date answer.

(1) If you are the expert, tell my why it isn't compatiable?
(2) Have you tried these recent model numbers?
(3) I didn't see any date on the documentation I read. Do you know when this was last updated? If so, please tell me how to determine that.

The usb adapter comes with a disk with drivers on it, which you can load into a computer. But a tivo you can't, so the only usb adapters that you can use with it were ones preset at the time it was manufactured. So the list of usb adapters doesn't get bigger, it gets smaller as they're replaced by updated versions.

that is a good explanation ... I do understand about how the drivers would need to be compatiable with the version of the hardware you are trying to attach. I'm assuming that at some point in time a rev of the USB adapter in question caused some incompatibility with Tivo ... perhaps Netgear fixed this or changed things. I'm not sure that the Tivo folks test every rev that comes out.

Rather than messing around with model revisions and serial numbers on the Netgear units, you might be better off just buying the TiVo Wireless G adapter ... guaranteed to work and transfers recordings faster as well.

3) That page was last updated last week when they added the new TiVo HD (model TCD652160) to the list of model numbers compatible with the TiVo wireless G adapter. Is that current enough for you?

I don't care how much of a Tivo propeller head you are, I wouldn't take your advice if it was the last, most accurate advice ever found here. You have no credibility in my book ...

I started out with a WG111 model listed on the TiVo website and it worked pretty well. I changed over to the TiVo branded adapter and it works much better. It is a good bit faster and maintains the connection better. The WG111 worked fine for downloading guide data, but was slow transferring.

I'd go with the TiVo adapter.

A thirty second check of the Netgear website confirms that the v3 adapter you are looking at will not work in a TiVo.

Good point Mark ... I should have known a Tivo newbe like me wouldn't get a helpful answer on this forum right away ... my bad.

Hat's off to Netgear, I wouldn't have expected them to mention Tivo at all ... like you said, I should've gone there instead ... just didn't think of it when I saw this forum. Bad decision I guess.

no worries windracer ... thanks for the encouragement (I was being a tad sarcastic in my last post ;o)). I'll be sticking around until I get this networking stuff working. I just need to remember that being a big shot on a message board is all some people have in life, and I just need to ignore those types.

BTW, I have shifted "gears" so to speak, and am going with the direct connect Linksys USB200M since it is cheaper, my computer isn't that far from where the Tivo will stay and it should be pretty fast. I just need to order that on-line.

Just a quick follow-up ... The Linksys USB 2.0 (USB200M) arrived today ... I plugged it in, made sure my Tivo Desktop was running (server started), Tivo auto configured it, and was up and running (after hitting a few "oks" to allow Tivo to connect through my firewall).

Got this at amazon.com for 25.88 - free shipping.
