sorry to trouble, and I've sent an email to the very helpful Dave @ TVL
thought I'd post here and see if anyone else could advise while I await his reply.

Everything arrived safely
Installed drive as per instructions, installed card and connected ethernet lead from internal socket to router.

Now I could have sworn that it completed one succesfull TEST CALL, done done done on all the test results (think it also said account check active or similar). However it would not complete a Daily Download!

Now when I select test call it says connecting for a very long time, then says FAILED. NUMBER UNAVAILABLE

am I doing anything inparticular wrong?
or is there anywhere I can look to see what is actually happening when its going through this mystery connecting phase?

I am able to connect to the TiVo via a web browser, and within: http://192.168.0.6/logs/http/ I can see various entries

Fri Oct 21 22:19:06 2011: /tvbin/tclient_post invoked
connecting to 204.176.49.3:80
read 364 bytes from file

that include the IP address 204.176.49.3 ...which I can successfully ping from any of my computers or from the router itself.
Is this where the TiVO gets its info?

once again, very sorry to trouble but was hoping this to be a plug and go solution to my modem woes (Tivo purchased on EvilBAY but modem was unable to make calls when I got the unit setup)

TIA

...and to make matters worse, I now appear to be trapped in Guided Setup Hell!

is there any way to EXIT this?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you installed a TurboNET card and bigger hard drive into an S1 unit?

If that is indeed the case...

You have to set the dialing prefix to ",#401" (without the quotes and this is entered with Pause Enter 4 0 1)

similar... a SiliconDust CacheCard/LAN card

the bigger drive comes pre-installed with all the necessary drivers etc.
Instructions advised NOT to modify the dialing prefix, however I'll take your advice on board (thankyou) and may try it later (what do I have to lose!)

Instructions advised NOT to modify the dialing prefix

14) If running tivo software 3.x then to enable the daily call over the network - go into the tivo phone menu and set the dialing prefix to <comma><hash><4><0><1>. If there is a call waiting prefix then remove it. Note - if configured for DHCP then you may need to reboot again.

Supasta, tried your suggestion to no avail...

with or without the prefix, after a LONG connection its says FAILED. NUMBER UNAVAILABLE

running v2.5something

...while talking to another very helpful member here, I was asked could I ping
204.176.49.31 from the bash# prompt via telnet (yes I can)

dont know if the below is helpful in the diagnosis but this was the only entry I could find from my http://192.168.0.6/logs/http/
