View Full Version : Will upgrading internal hard drive disable CableCards?

Hi All,

My Tivo S3's original hard disk is making the click of death occasionally, so I'd like to upgrade it while it's still readable.

I've searched around these forums, and it seems that some people required CableCard re-pairing after a hard disk update.

Is there any way that I can replace the internal hard drive without having to deal with Comcast? Those guys are an incredible PITA. It looks like using dd to dump the old disk to a new one, then expanding it with mfstools might work, but I'm not sure.

Also, do I have to get a WD drive or will one of the Seagate DB35 models fit without any modification?

The DB35 drives work fine. If you copy/expand your existing drive, you will not need to repair the CableCARDs after the update.

You can use mfstools to make a copy of your old drive to the new drive and not require re-pairing. It's only if you use a different image (or a new pre-imaged drive) that you run into problems.
