I have direct tv and a tivo DVR39 by RCA. A couple of months ago it started acting up. It had a blank onscreen guide and it was unable to find satalite #2. I called direct tv out to trouble shoot, Well they sent a mouth breathing moron out that tried to take my owned equipment and left left me with a POS direct tv DVR 15. This thing is the biggest POS I have ever seen. After having Tivo for 3 years I just cant deal with this thing. Where is the best place to send my DVR39 for repair? I dont mind spending some money as long as they fix it fast and fix it right.

Thanks

If it is the hard drive, then replace it yourself. Using InstantCake and a new hard drive, sized to your liking, is quite easy. Or buy a new drive from Weaknees or DVRUpgrade.

Im an electronics moron. How would I know if it's the hard drive or something else? Honestly I would rather send it off for someone else to repair as Im unsure of myself.

Swap the Sat In 1 and Sat In 2 inputs to see if the problem changes to Sat 1. Also tell us what dish you have and whether there is another multiswitch being used. Have you checked the signal strengths of all transponders from the dish?

Is there any pixelation of the picture while watching?

There is this site for repairs.

Alright I swapped the 1 and 2 leads but the provlem is still on sat #2 I have an oval 3 lnb Dish. Im not sure what a multiswitch is. I only have satalite in two rooms and I have a separate dish for each reciever. The signal strength on each transponder is 90% or so on sat 1 and 0% on sat 2. Transponders 4-18-26-28 have no signal at all. There is no pixelation of the picture.

Thaks very much for your help.

Since the problem stayed with Sat 2, then that tuner has failed. You could re-run guided set up and select the one tuner.

Those TPs you listed are spot beams which are for delievery of locals to different parts of the country. The other spots are 12 and 20, one of which is probably very high and the other lower.

Thanks very much for your help. I called CCS this morning and I'll be sending it off later today. $169 for repair and 160 gig drive. I think it will be worth every penny. I cant wait to box up this direct tv unit and tell them to choke on it. :)

$169 for a new tuner and hard drive is actually a good price. The tuners in series 2 units and newer are surface mounted chips. They are hard to replace.

They are a fine organization and very thorough in diagnosing and repairing problems.

I am a electronics moron also but took the plunge to upgrade myself as my upgraders locally kept moving.

It took me almost 2 weeks and I ruined one directivo so I thought and many weeks later reading about problems with tivos and trying to fix them I finally got the one I thought I ruined to work. I think I have a bad image that I was trying to use.

But like JimSpence says, it is easy. The last guy who helped me, I bought a upgraded drive from weaknees and he put it in for me and when he said watch out for the power supply, I thought I could never do this but several months later I did.

Take a look a some upgrading instructions and look at the upgrading forum and if you need a little info I would be happy to share what little I know.

It took 7 days for the repair and return. It works like a charm.

Many thanks to the folks of TiVo Community forum.

Im back :)
