No. Not built into the TiVo.
But, you can keep an eye on your Suggestions folder and your Recently Deleted folders. These folders will have shows permanently deleted from them first. The lower your counts in these folders, the closer to a full HD you are.
Also, if you have a broadband connected S2 box, I would also suggest TiVoPlaylist.

TiVoPlayList runs on your PC and can give you are great estimate of how much space is used/left on your TiVo. Aside from that it also has a ton of other great features as well.
EDIT: Can you explain how your TiVo is behaving strangely? Depending on the symptoms it has, it may be that you have a failing hard drive.

so what happens if the hard drive fails? Is it hard to replace or can only tivo do it?

You must reimage tbe Tivo software on a new hard drive before installing it in a Tivo, or buy it already imaged from one of the vendor's here. There's a whole forum dedicated to it Tivo Upgrade (http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=25)

Only if you have a "full" drive and allow the Tivo to manage deletions itself.
