What I'm talking about:
To dump a program on to a VCR is so easy and neat. Just hit "record to VCR" and bam it tells the vcr to start recording. (must have a tape inside)
I've read this forum trying to see if anybody brought this up before.

If you have a stand alone DVD recorder and a disc already inside....
Why doesn't it kick on when I hit "record to VCR"

If it's the Dvd recorder's fault, please tell me?
If it's Tivo's software fault, why hasn't such a thing been fixed?

Please read this below. So many treads I've read start going into this subject, and I don't want to.

What I'm not talking about:
1. Transferring shows to a computer then burning to dvd.
2. Using a Tivo / Dvd unit "all in one"

Let me see if I understand your question -

When you hit "Save to VCR," your DVD player... Doesn't power up? Doesn't automatically begin recording?

You have to hit Record on the DVD recorder right after you hit "Start saving from the beginning."

Exactly what problem are you having?

1. I but a blank DVD in my stand alone dvd recorder and turn it on.
2. I locate the show in tivo and select "save to vcr" (one would think dvd recorder too. LOL) ... and of course "start from the beginning" is selected.
3. My issue is that the dvd recorder doesn't auto start and stop like the vcr would. I don't know how the tivo "spoke" to the vcr, but it was nice that it did.
Is this a dvd recorder issue or tivo software or a hardware issue?

Remember to not bring up the fact that tivo has a all in one dvd recorder / tivo unit. I'm not buying that unit. Tivo mess up when they switch to that 3 year commitment crap.

Also trasfering to a computer is also out of the question. My linksys wireless-B thing is just too slow, and I think I read it's in some stupid file format.

Don't mind me I'm just a little mad.

I'm impressed that the VCR somehow started recording on its own. I have no idea how that would have worked.

Seems like you could still make the DVD recorder work by manually starting recording at the appropriate time...

I don't know how your TiVo "spoke" to your VCR either. I've never seen or heard of that happening the way you describe. Maybe it was a feature of your particular VCR.

I've always had to manually start the VCR (when I had one) and my DVD recorder. That's why the TiVo displays the black screen with the recording information for a few seconds, so the recording unit can get going.

The Sony TiVo Series 1 would "speak" to a Sony VCR, I did set one up for a friend in 2001. (it used the IR blaster one for the cable box the other for the VCR)

Yup, my Sony T60 would start my Sony VCR. Didn't have to use the IR blaster as a direct connection between the unit's IR ports worked.

But, you have to press record on the DVD recorders once you start playing the show from your TiVo.

This was a Sony feature that the OP is referring to. My Series 2 Sony (SVR-3000) would communicate with my Sony VCR via the IR Blaster and automatically power on and record when I selected the Save to VCR option. After quite some time the IR blasters bothered me (they moved and never seemed to work right) so I put them away.

Fast forward to the present day and I have a dvd recorder which I need to power on, insert disc, and press record all on my own.

Yes, it would switch the vcr recorder on and when it was done it would turn the vcr off. I've done this w/ my S1 tivo. I haven't tried the S2 tivo. I would think it would do it too. I did this with a older vcr. It was either a Emerson or GE maybe both as I don't remember one not doing it.

Oh, and no IR blasters, just coax.

The Series 1s (Standalones anyways) have an IR blaster on the front, which could control an STB or a VCR. For VCR control, yes, it is only on Sony TiVos, and for control of only certain Sony VCRs that were probably current when the feature was implemented.

TiVo never saw to expand it to their or other brand TiVo DVRs, expand the supported VCRs, or add DVD recorders to the list.

There is an off chance than a Sony brand DVD recorder may work.

Thanks for everyone's feedback and help on this issue. :)

This was probably only on the Sony Series-1 and Sony VCRs, or any other VCR that used the Sony S-Link control connection.
