Just recently I bought upgrade drives for both of my Tivo TCD24004A's. I decided to start from scratch on both instead of attempting to backup and restore since one of them was definitely about to lose it's harddrive, and the other I think wasn't too far behind.

Got two 160GB drives, hooked them up one at a time, ran InstantCake with no problems on either. Installed and started to go through the Guided Setup, force a call to get updated software etc etc.

Now the wierd part. One of the Tivo's updated to software 8.3-01-2-140 after just a couple of calls. Everything is fine on that one. The other one seems to download the 8.3 update and tells me it's Pending Restart, but after that restart I'm still at 7.2.0-oth-01-2-140. So far it's gone through the Pending Restart, restart, not updated cycle 4 or 5 times.

Both can see each other and my system with Tivo Desktop on my network, browse the Now Playing list and all that. Both picked up both my Media Key and their LIfetime Service status correctly.

Now it's been a few years since I really dug deep into how the Tivo's run, but I seem to remember that the software was essentially installed on two separate partitions, one live and one backup. When a service update came down the Tivo would install it to the backup partition, and then configure the Tivo to use that partition on the next restart. So my suspicion is that it's getting the update, but for some reason not setting the configuration to use it on the next restart. I've even done a complete powerdown and restart just in case, still no luck.

Any suggestions on how to fix this one?

Update: Pulled the drive to run Seagate's Seatools diags. It found one error that it corrected. Reinstalled and the service update worked with no problems. Gonna run it for a week or so and pull it to run SeaTools again just to be sure.
