I've had my Tivo box way before I got Direct TV. I've had Tivo so long I'm only paying 7 dollars a month for the service....which is why I haven't switched. How do I have my Tivo work with the DTV Receiver? Do I need to buy special cables, etc? Is this possible?
Please help....I'm lost without my Tivo.

Why not just get a Dtivo? The fee is $5.99 a month and you get dual tuners and a much better picture? You can find a Dtivo pretty cheap these days.
If you really want to use a standalone tivo, just put the IR cable in front of the directv receiver and run through guided setup again.

If I end service with Tivo, then I will have to buy new DVR, or DirecTivo, and I don't want that option, since I plan to move out in 3 months and get comcast. What are my options?

If you activate a standard receiver with DirecTV there will be a one year commitment.

Try Arcady's instructions for running guided setup again.

What model of Directv Receiver do you have?
The older versions: RCA420RE, D10 and earlier can control the Tivo by the IR Blaster or Low Speed Data Cable.
The D11 and New D12 can only control the Tivo unit by IR Blaster.
All you have to do is hook up the Receiver to the Tivo, and run guided setup. Tell the Tivo that you are using a Directv Sat Receiver.
With Directv you will have a One Year commitment for a Standard Receiver. For a Directv DVR, you will have a Two Year commitment.
