I have a Tivo Series 2 40GB unit that I have been trying to upgrade to a 320gb drive. I have been using the Hinsdale instructions and testing on every step. The unit worked fine at every test until I tried to expand the unit to use the full drive.

The tools said that the process went through fine and I had something like 326 extra minutes of recording time vs the original. I installed the hard drive back into the Tivo and now I get the first start up screen and it then it turns grey.

I assume either I ^%$#$# something up converting the drive or the power supply quit and won’t start up the hard drive. Maybe the flux capacitor died…I don’t know.

I tried the Tivo drive and the backup hard drive I have and the same problem. Is it dead or am I missing something?

Do you get anything beyond "Welcome...powering up"?

Does your original drive work in the TiVo?

Nope.... grey screen

I tried my original Tivo drive and it does the same thing.

I want to blame someone but obvious I ^%$#$^ something up.

I did do a backup to a separate drive but if the image is still good I have not figured out how to restore it.

I don't know enough about Linux to acess the drive and the instructions reguarding MFS tools go over my head

FYI, The "Hinsdale instructions" are out of date and will not work with drives larger then 250G. You need to follow the WeaKnees Interactive TiVo Upgrade Instructions (http://tivo.upgrade-instructions.com/index.php) or MFSLive CD and instructions (http://mfslive.org) you are probably missing the -r 4 option

You may be right... I tried so many lines of code that I have no idea what went wrong

Instant Cake just read the disk size and created an image. It worked great.

It only took me 17 hours to figure this out, suddenly the cost of the Series 3 seems reasonable

By the way... should there be a sticky put on this list that gives the working instructions or at least a list of the good sites. There are so many sites out there that give almost conflicting information.

IMO it should be your ONLY source for TiVo upgrade instruction.
