Hi,

I currently have a Samsung Sir300W, a non dvr unit that is activated on my account. I recently bought a Hughes directv tivo dvr receiver via ebay. I want to replace my samsung with the hughes receiver with hopefully the least amount of hassle possible. Can anyone suggest how this should be accomplished? Thanks in advance for any replies.

CSR = Customer Service Roulette

If A won't let you activate the moved card, hang up and try B and C and...

Thanks for replying John. What about the option of hooking up the box I am getting, inserting the active card from my Samsung, and then refreshing the new box. Will that work? I saw online where you can refresh a box. Any thoughts on that?

It's not that easy. You'll have to call to activate the new DirecTivo using your old Tivo's Access Card. The CSR might let you do, or they might not. The general policy is to require purchase of new Access Card for ~$20.

You may have some success, if you make sure they know that the access card is coming out of a receiver that's already on your account (which you will be removing). I see no reason why they couldn't move the card in this situation.

Yes you can transfer an Access Card already on your Account to another unit.

Phone Directv and tell them you wish to REPLACE the Samsung Sir300W with the Hughes unit. You can make up a story - something about the Samsung unit died etc.

You will get transferred to the Card Activations department. They will need the information from the New Hughes unit. They then will unmarry the Card from the Sumsung unit and marry it to the Hughes unit.

Make sure they remove the Samsung unit from your account.

All up it takes about 20 Mins. Saves you $20.00 for a New Access Card and having to wait a few Days for the card to arrive. :D

Thanks for your replies. When I receive the unit from the ebay auction, hook it up, and call directv, I will follow up with how it goes.

Jim

PS..I presume since I bought the unit 3rd party and will hopefully transfer my card from an active receiver to a directv tivo, directv will not try to hook me with a committment, since there is no lease involved?

Correct. Just be sure to verify that when you call to activate the DVR.

As promised, a follow-up. Got the receiver today, and it worked fine. I called DirecTV and they used the original card that happen to come with the receiver from the original owner. They were not interested in me transferring my card that I had on the Samsung. They transferred the old card to my name with no problem except they showed the unit leased, but I got transferred to another dept. and they updated it to a bought unit so there is no programming committment. I checked and there were no old charges that creeped in on my account.

I was surprised at them wanting to use the old access card, but was glad it all worked out okay without me having to buy a new access card. Thanks to all of you that provided help in this thread. I do appreciate it.

Wow thats a surprise!

They normally will not use an Old Card.

But glad all worked out and is well :D

Great follow up -- thanks. Really helps a bunch of us who may or will soon be doing the same thing soon. And as others have pointed out -- doesn't mean the rep I get on the phone will do the same thing -- but certainly gives another "card" to play if we meet resistance ;-)
