PROGRAMMING -- DIRECTV began airing its preview of MHD, MTV's high-definition network this week. The company, which plans to add the HD network full-time in September, is showing the sneak-peek on channel 332 and channel 95. According to TVPredictions, the DIRECTV MHD preview will include a special broadcast of the six-hour Concert for Diana, an HD tribute event honoring the late Princess Diana, on July 1.

I hate MTV and what it has become. But it's nice to see that DTV is letting us see what all they are bringing to us.
I just hope this "Preview" is handled better than the National Geographic HD "Preview" where it would list it all day as upcoming, then when it came on, it would go away in 10 minutes.

this is on now and looks pretty good
so how did they change channels or was there always this gap in there? seems odd they planned so far in the future for this to slide right in that slot

Channel 95? This means that I can get this in my HD Tivo... Will the rest of the Fall HD channels be available to folks with HD Tivos? And I don't mean the networks.... but Nat Geographic, etc.

Wednesday the CEO of DTV said Directv10 is sitting on the launch pad and should launch in 7-10 days.

MTV-HD is known as MHD. It's not an HD version of the standard def MTV channel, assuming that's the channel that DirecTV is previewing. We've got it on cable. It's pretty good, although content is limited, hence repeated a lot.

All new HD will be in MPEG4 and on the new sats. All current MPEG2 HD will be moved to MPEG4 and the new sats and shut down on the current sats. Been the plan for 3 years. ;)

The most recent email newsletter d* sent out had me wondering, I emailed customer service, their reply:
"I'm sorry for the confusion about the e-mail that you received. I understand your concern about how our transition to MPEG-4 transmission will affect any MPEG-2 equipment you may have. Let me reassure you that most customers will be able to use their MPEG-2 equipment for quite some time.
At this time, our current HD programming will continue to be broadcast using the MPEG-2 standard; MPEG-4 technology will be used only to provide local HD programming in select cities.
Once local HD programming launches in your city, you will be eligible for an MPEG-4-capable receiver replacement. If you want to replace your HD DVR, our new MPEG-4-capable DIRECTV HD DVR is available to order."
I will never have locals in this small mountain valley AND pay equipment protection. I hope that sometime in the future when tivo and D* sare back in bed together, and a nev hd reciever comes out that my hr10-250 can take it's proverbial dump.

That email is dead wrong. The new channels will be mpeg4 and available all over.

The email is right and wrong. For now the MPEG2 HD channels will remain and your HR10 will be just fine with them. But they will be switched over to MPEG4 eventually. Most target that as mid 2008 to end of 2008. So you might have a year and a half left, so that may = "for quite some time" depending on your timeframe.
Also their response just says that you can still use your MPEG2 equipment, doesn't mention HD and so they are technically correct. Even after MPEG2 HD is changed over an HR10 will keep on functioning until it dies so you may very well still be using it 4 years from now as an SD and OTA HD DVR if you so choose.
Of course they only address HD locals in MPEG4 and not the new national channels coming.

I'm getting this on 332 today, not in 95. Nice to have the Diana concert in HD & switching back between that & VH1 realize what a vast, vast improvement it is. The audio is 100% better.
It's also cool to see music on an MTV channel, but I assume that's only temporary until they can get enough teen reality content in HD to flush out the music programming.

The ColdPlay concert after the Diana event looked terrible. Lots of jaggies. Boo DirecTV!
