Do a title or keyword search for Live Earth.

Who the hell are these idiots in Sydney with the "say no to nuclear energy" shirts and dancers doing the aboriginal equivilent of black-face routines? So many things wrong with that, I don't know where to start. I'm all for the enviornmental movement, reducing emmisions, and everything else Al Gore talked about, but stupid and ignorant stuff like that slogan just makes me realize why the movement probably won't accomplish anything meaningful. Hopefully sometime the anti-nuclear people will realize that in the real world "say no to nuclear" equals "say yes to oil/coal/gas". Oh, and the white dancers dressed like aborgines running around like monkeys were racist, or at least I thought they were. Maybe I misinterpreted it...

I have UHD on now for 15 minutes, 2 really strange short films, 2 songs and about 3 dozen commercials. How long are they thinking someone will stay tuned in at this rate?

Missy Higgins is real cute.

Well, it's a concert with the theme of activism, specifically activism for global warming. You've got to figure it would feature things of that nature.

Also, the more prominent or "known" bands and musicians won't be on until 8:30AM (when bands and singers like Duran Duran, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Spinal Tap, James Blunt, Metallica, Beastie Boys, and Madonna, to name a few, will perform at Wembley Stadium in London) and 2:30PM (New York, where at Giants Stadium, The Smashing Pumpkins, The Police, Roger Waters, KT Tunstall, John Mayer, Melissa Etheridge, and The Dave Matthews Band, to name a few, will be performing), so perhaps they're thinking more people will be watching this later in the day and they can therefore air more promos, short films, and the like now instead of then.

Also, I'd like to add...who knew Toni Collette could ROCK like that? She performed with her band Toni Collette & the Finish in Sydney and all I've got to say is...WOW!

The cable networks are presenting a "best of" and have sliced down several performances. The best part about watching the Live Earth concerts online is not being held at the mercy of either Universal HD, sundance channel, CNBC, Bravo, or NBC. You can pick and choose which concert to watch, LIVE, as it's airing.

http://liveearth.msnbc.com

Spinal Tap's currently playing in London right now. They played the song "Stonehenge". Two little people danced around small Stonehenge stones. David St. Hubbins took a call on his cell phone during an instrumental break in the song. Nigel came out saying, "Hello Wimbledon!"

Now they're playing "Warmer Than Hell".

This is great! :)

The coverage on Sundance/Bravo has been very disjointed.

They never know how to broadcast these type of events. On Bravo, after the Chili Peppers played, they played a few more artists -- John Legend, Corinne Bailey Rae, Keane -- then all of a sudden they played another song from the earlier Chili Peppers set.

Rule #1 -- don't break up a band's set and then come back to them later -- it lessens the enjoyment for the viewers at home who will then turn off the show and fail to see the message that you're trying to deliver with these concerts.

I've got my DVR recording this all day off UHD. I've sped through most of it and right now am about half an hour behind the live feed. Metallica was the only one I watched the entire set of. I watched two Beastie Boys songs. I've watched full songs of quite a few bands like Phil Collins, or was that Genesis? A lot of these musicians I've never even heard of.

Never a word I would associate with her.

I'm not a big fan. Don't have any of her albums, never seen her live.

But I think it's accurate. Her ability to keep herself modern for over 20 years, to constantly be changing it up, to keep her finger on the pulse of popular culture, to market herself, is nothing sort of genius.

I think her set was fantastic.

While I can't say I particularly enjoyed the first song they played, the rest of the Smashing Pumpkins set was awesome. I can't wait for their new album. I've been waiting 7 years for it, but the next 2 days will be torture.

Is their new single really pronounced tar-an-TU-la, or was that a lame joke by Billy?

Well, all of the feeds are looping right now on the Live Earth website, so you can probably catch it once more today that way... otherwise, the website is talking about having on-demand video available tomorrow.

If I recall correctly, she did "Hey You," "Ray Of Light," "La Isla Bonita," and "Hung Up."

They actually showed their entire set on Bravo (I think). They played a new song first (complete with Jimi Hendrix style 'Star Spangled Banner' in the middle), then Bravo went to commercial. When they came back, they played Bullet With Butterfly Wings, Tarantula, and Today.

The new song is from their new album Zeitgeist. The title of the song is "United States", hence "The Star Spangled Banner" break in the middle.

It's just a lame joke by Billy. At their concert in Berlin on June 5th, he told the crowd that he named the song that in honor of the band The Scorpions.

I turned on the NBC coverage for a little while, just in time to see Ann Curry badgering Al Gore about whether he was going to run for office again. He kept hemming and hawing and trying to change the subject back to Live Earth and she just wouldn't let it go.

A couple of lowlights for me...

Kanye West withThe Police - WTF was that???????????

Confirmation that Roger Waters is nothing without Dave, Rick and Nick. Man, if you can't sing, do what Carlos Santana does and get someone who can! His attempts at classic PF was just painful.

(To put that last statement into context, I'm a HUGE PF fan and I've seen them live both with and without Roger. He's a great songwriter and visionary, but he just plain can't sing!).

The online feeds were very good. Commercial free, everything shown in it's entirety, and the audio was surprisingly good for as many people as were watching it.

Unfortunately, they took the full concert streams down and replaced them with the on demand clips, and now you have to sit through commercials before every song, and not every song is even up (looks like they dropped at least 1 song from every single set).

I had this concert on most of the day Saturday. I think they pulled it off really well. Great production quality and they kept things flowing. I really liked Metallica, Bon Jovi, Madonna, Ethridge, Linkin Park, and Lenny Kravitz.
I was really looking forward to the Police, but I was disappointed. Sting sings those classic rock songs with his toned down solo act voice, it really ruins it for me, not to mention Mayer and Kanye West.

I was going to ask here what the other networks did.. I wonder what other countries' networks did. Did they play full concerts with far less 'host' talking head stuff?

What I *did* see (some Genesis, Police, Keith Urban/Alicia Keys, Alicia Keys) was very good, and I'm likely to buy it on DVD.. (which I hope it will...) at least when it falls down to the $20 range!

Not a defense, but ....
Umm, didn't he do a remake of a Police song, and Sting did the intro? (At least I saw that on the Grammies or something a few years ago..)

Also, on "Bring on the Night", AFAIR, one of the good Sting songs is almost ruined by a rapper in the middle of it.. so it's not a new thing.

Sure they will, but I won't have to watch that chapter... Nor will a specific artist be interrupted by some inane "go green, it's healthy" garbage from Uncle Al...

How disappointing was the Garth Brooks song? Get a single mic for the actual verse-singer(s) and then another mic for the vocal choral singer(s). Poorly executed. Great song for the theme, but extremely poorly executed...

That was actually Sean Combs/Puff Daddy/P. Diddy. It was a reworking of "Every Breath You Take" which became "I'll Be Missing You" in memory of Combs' friend and fellow rapper Chris Wallace/Notorious B.I.G./Biggie Smalls. Sting sang part of it live at an awards show.

I saw the Black Eyed Peas "Let's get it started (retarded)". Am I crazy, or did the crowd look like they didn't know how to respond, and maybe even were displeased at the end of the song? They cut away immediately, but I got the impression that the noise coming from the crowd wasn't cheering...I'm surprised they let them sing the original lyrics, since they had to change the song to "Let's get it started" to get radio play.

Unfortunately Madonna was plugged in, this was proven by the fact that she had that guy helping her feedback... How pathetic is it that she needed help, that's one of the first things you learn to do with an electric guitar.

I was impressed by a couple of the Japanese bands in Tokyo. I was impressed by both Abingdon Boys School [Even though they were dressed as school girls] and Rize. Both were very talented and better than 80% of the other bands on that day.

The whole belly-dancing thing she's been doing since she was 10.

And she actually can play the guitar. I saw her do so on MTV Unplugged a few years ago, and it wasn't just for one song. She's written or co-written all of her albums. Early in her career, some of the music she made in her native country was more of the Alanis Morissette variety. I'm not a pop fan but Shakira's most certainly not a Britney Spears.
