My sisters hr10-250 stopped working, so she brought it to me to look at.

When I plug it in the fan and the hard drive spin up but no lights on the front and no output to screen show.

I pulled the hard drive tested it and it powers up and is recognized.

I am open for suggestions. I am very familiar with and have used MFS tools to upgrade repair various Tivos in the past. Can you use MFS tools on the directv HD Tivos.

I am thinking of trying a new drive in the unit just to see what happens.

TIA
Brian

Yes, you can use MFSTools just fine. But this sounds more like a power supply problem, or defect on the motherboard.

I'm guessing power supply.

It may be that the voltage that spins the fan and HD are good and one or more of the others is bad.

Thanks for the responses, I checked all the cable connections. I will test the power supply output to the board. If that is good I will guess the Mobo is damaged.
Does anyone know if the PC boards on the front panel go bad will that knock out the whole unit?

I know that Weaknees states very clearly in their DIY literature that if you don't have the ribbon cable seated properly and you boot up, even just for a minute, it can boat-anchor your Tivo permanently, so a failure of the control board would probably also have a catastrophic effect.
