View Full Version : ADVICE REQ.: Standalone + DirecTV DVR a good idea?

Recently relocated, I'm considering restarting my DirecTV account. In the interim, I got a standalone Series 2 TiVo to work with the lowly TimeWarner cable box in our temporary apartment.

DirecTV has promised me a new D12 unit, which I read in these forums is better for compatability with the IR blaster. My hope is to continue using this great series 2 unit with my network, etc. Would love any opinions on this thinking...

My question is this: is it smarter to instead get the DirecTV DVR unit and try to use it with the standalone as well? Sort of a two-pronged recording juggernaut?

PROS: DirecTV DVR can record multiple channels, digital recording, etc.

CONS: DirectTV interface I hear is lousy, TiVO interface is known/loved by us.

It may be redundant and unnecessary. But I do want to ensure that the S2 can play well with the DTV receiver, which these forums suggest it will.

THANKS for your advice. Please avoid flames... I've done lots of searches here and haven't quite found the answers I'm after.

Welcome to Tivo Community!

A D12 Receiver should interface nicely with your Series 2 Tivo. Don't try to interface your Tivo with a DirecTV DVR, though. But you might consider BOTH a DirecTV DVR plus your standalone Tivo with the D12 Receiver. Your Tivo+D12 will not have the benefit of dual tuners.

Welcome to Tivo :D

I am in Total agreeance. The Directv D12 will work well with the SA Series 2.

Running the R15 (Directv's DVR) with a SA Tivo will cause Problems.

Best bet: Get the R15 unit from Directv and use that. Also get a D12 Standard Receiver and use the Series 2 Tivo with that unit.

Total Costs:

Base Package (Because you are a New Customer, the DVR Fee is already built into the package)

R15. Free Each month.
D12: $4.99 a Month Second Receiver.

plus of course the Tivo Series 2 Fee.

This way, you will still have recording and transfering ability with the tivo unit (Home Network)

Or you could just run the D12 and Tivo unit. It will save you $4.99 a Month :D
