View Full Version : Does replacing TIVO R10 require 2-yr service agreement?

In 2005 I upgraded one of my standard receivers to a TIVO with a 1-yr service committment with Directv. They had to replace it twice within one month. So in 2006 when I heard that Directv would stop using TIVOs, I purchased an extra TIVO R10 to have on hand if the one from Directv broke. There was no service committment mentioned when I purchased the replacement TIVO. In June 2006 my original TIVO broke, so I contacted Directv about connecting my replacement TIVO and gave them the new access card & serial numbers. I contacted them yesterday about changing my service and was told that I had a new two-year committment beginning June 2006 when I replaced the TIVO. Can they do this? If you replace their Tivo with a REFURBISHED model, would that also require a 2-yr committment? This was not what I would consider an ugrade, but rather a replacement of defective equipment. Any answers would be appreciated.

If you got the DTivo through DirecTV and it's leased then you're stuck with the 2-year commitment. If you own the DTivo outright then there's no commitment. If DTV replaced the DTivo under the service agreement then chances are it's considered a leased DVR and not owned.

I think the key here is that you bought from DirecTv, not another vendor
I recently added an HR10-250 to my account... NOT purchased from DirecTv... and there was never an issue of adding to my service committment

You should call and check your account. Its my understanding that when you activate a new unit, a 2 year commitment is added to your account regardless of where you bought your unit.

Activating a never-been-on-your-account DVR, TiVo or otherwise, triggers a 2-year commitment. Nothing to do with the subsidy or lack there of, it's triggered by the activation. Been this way for at least two years.
