Anybody run into this: Directv will only record if my tv is set to the channel that the program I would like to record is on. During set up, it told me to contact directv but they didn't know what I was talking about. Any help much appreciated.

Not sure you explained it here that well either. I may be able to answer making some assumptions, though.

I'm assuming that by "my TV is set tothe channel" you mean that the receiver is set to the channel.

It sounds like you don't have both tuners set up. Do you have two cables going into the box from the dish? If so, rerun guided setup and tell the box that you have both tuners active (I think - it's a while since I've done this).

Yes, thank you, It will only record when the Directv receiver is on the channel I want to record. I.E. I want to record a show on nbc at 8pm, I have to make sure the directv receiver is on the nbc channel. I'll have to check just how many cables I have running from my dish, this evening but I believe there is only one.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you have a stand-alone TiVo or a DirecTiVo? What model TiVo do you have?

It's a stand alone model.

It's a series 2 model I believe. Kind of the standard model that they offer for free if you subscribe. -

That standalone TiVo can only record one channel.
The one that the DirecTV receiver is set to.
The TiVo controls the receiver using the IR emitters.

So you have a Stand Alone Directv Receiver, which has only one Sat Input, and a Series 2 DT Tivo unit.

The Tivo will only record what channel the Sat Receiver is on.

Sounds like your Tivo unit is not changing the channel on the Sat Receiver. I am willing to bet you have a D11 Directv Sat Receiver and are using the IR Blasters. If so, have fun setting it up right. You may get the right channel changing about 40% of the time if lucky :D

That's exactly right, the tivo is NOT changing the channels. That's the issue and, although, I don't know my directv model off hand I am using the IR sensors which seems to be a pretty archaic system to me.

So, you are telling that if I were to get the tivo to change my channels (Which is the problem here - any solution?) that if I came home to watch some program that I recorded it may or may not be there? A complete crapshoot?

The D11 unit has a major problem in changing Channels using the IR Blaster. You may very well come home to find the program you wanted to record is not there.

I use the D10 unit, because of the ability to use the Low Speed Data Connection. This changes the channel 100% of the time and is great.

Or, the newer D12 unit (Black in color) not the silver D11 seems to have fixed the IR issue and also works great.

Um thats not good at all.

A D10 from Weeknees costs $99.00 each.

I picked up 3 D10 units on EBay with Remotes and all wiring etc for $15.00 Shipped to my Door. All 3 work great and had no problems activating them.

If you went with the D10, then get a Low Speed Data Cable. They are about $7.00 from Tivo.com. That works 100% of the time.

My first DirecTV receiver, an RCA, cost $700 and I had to buy it on the black market to even get that price. To me, $99 is giving it away. :)

Alternatively, you can find the Hughes HTL-HD reciever on ebay at a reasonble price. This model also works with the low speed serial connection cable which in my opinion is more reliable than the ir blaster method. This receiver has the added advantage of being able to receive over the air digital broadcasts of high def channels.
