I am looking at the Hughes HR10-250 on ebay. I would like to upgrade to HDTV but don't want the Directv plus HD DVR. My brother just got that and I can't stand it coming from a true Tivo box. Is the HR10-250 the best bet for going to HD with Tivo or is there something better that I could look at.

Thanks for any and all help.

The HR10-250 is the only HD box available that's a Tivo. The only other choice is the HR20 which is a non-Tivo DVR.

After looking through more threads it looks as though the HR10-250 will not pickup local HD chanles. Is this true.

HR10 has been replaced and hasn't been for sale for nearly a year now.

The HR10 cannot pick up any of the new HD and the current MPEG2 HD will be converted to MPEG4 within a year or so which means the HR10 will only be good for SD and OTA. In other words if you want HD and want to stay with DirecTV the HR20 (non-Tivo) is really your only choice. HR10 will be fine for OTA HD and SD from DirecTV if that's what you want it for.

For more info on the HR20 go to the link in my sig.

Depends on how you want to receive them. OTA is doable, but MPEG-4 HD local feed from DIRECTV isn't.

Thanks for the help. I guess I will wait and see if DTV and Tivo get back in bed with each other.

Sighhhhhh.

And yet people are buying them on eBay, Craigs List, and an occasional straggler in the retail chains all the time.

Used yes. But new ones haven't been made since early 2006 at the latest and haven't been available new for many months unless you really look hard. Fact is it's been discontinued.

All HD locals and RSN's in HD are MPEG4. All the new HD coming will be MPEG4. Assuming the new sat gets up there in less then 2 weeks it will start in late September.

Source, please?

DirecTV themselves? Ummm, this has been the plan for nearly 4 years now and widely known. All current MPEG2 HD will be converted to MPEG4 and moved to the new sats and the MPEG2 HD feeds will be shut down. That is fact. Timing is the unknown. Many have thought not until end of 2008 but more and more it's looking like middle of 2008. Just all depends on when HD subs reach a critical mass of % with an MPEG4 receiver.

That's certainly the opinion of DirecTV salespeople.

Ummm, how is that an opinion when it is a hard fact? The simple fact is the HR10 cannot see the new sats at 99 or 103 and cannot decode MPEG4. Doesn't make it a bad receiver at all, it just can't tune in to the new technology. Only the H20 and HR20 can currently do that. Once the conversion is over then the HR10 will still be a fantastic receiver for OTA HD and SD off the sat. If the original poster was thinking of buying an HR10 thinking he was going to get all the new HD then he would be wasting his money. Is it wrong to tell the truth? Sometimes I just don't get you guys...

And you are here on a Tivo forum why?

Because I've been here for the better part of 7 years and have several Tivo's in my house and owned several more over the past 7 years. Someone was confused on the future of HD at DirecTV and I answered with simple fact. I did not put down Tivo in any way. I'm sorry if the fact the HR10 can't receive the new HD somehow is a put down to you or "badmouthing" Tivo. Oh well.

OK, I see.

See what? That I simply directed him to the proper forum to find out more about the HR20 so that it won't be discussed here because people here get all upset about it?

So I guess you'd rather the facts of the situation not be explained and the poster get lied too.

Ok, I see.

Boy, just can't win.

I don't see it either. The OP asked about TiVo for DIRECTV HD and was given the state of things as they exist today, there is only one model, it only does MPEG-2 HD, and it production run ended awhile back.

Here's the other option if you feel you must have TiVo and HD programming right now: get a S3 TiVo. And the crucial thing to consider if you're going with cable as your new provider, find out as much as you can about the prospect for deployment of Switched Digital Video in your area. If it's Time-Warner Cable, be advised they've announced they plan to implement it in 50% of their markets.

If Comcast is in your area, they're supposed to be deploying TiVo in areas where they have Motorola DVRs. Supposedly Boston in August will be the premiere. Cox also has an agreement with TiVo.

If the OP wants to cross his fingers and hope DIRECTV and TiVo release new integrated MPEG-4 capable DVRs, that's their choice. I personally would wait until I hear news from Malone about any chance of this rather than Rogers talking in front of his investors.

Thanks for all the info guys. I am in the same situation and came here and found the thread and all of the information without having to ask a single question.

Much appreciated.

You searched and found your answer? I hope this isn't a trend. How will this place continue without the endless stream of "Will my DirecTivo stop working if I unplug the phone line?" or "Can I connect my DirecTivo to my TV cable?".
