View Full Version : How do I display my DirecTivo on an LCD computer monitor?

I have a bedroom HDVR2 that I currently use with a tiny analog 15" CRT TV. I recently freed up a 19" Dell LCD computer monitor with D-SUB (VGA) and DVI-D inputs and would like to use it with my Tivo.

Is this possible? If so, would it be better (and / or cheaper) to use the VGA input on the monitor, or the DVI input?

Thanks.

I think you'll find that your HDVR2 doesn't have the correct OUTPUT to use with your monitor.

Not easily. You'll need an composite video to VGA converter, and they're not cheap.

Some newer LCD monitors support DVI/HDMI, which you could use if you had a HiDef DVR, like the HR10-250 or HR20, but that won't help you with your HDVR2.

This TV Tuner box MIGHT work TV Tuner to VGA (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=TV-LCD01&cat=TVS)

Some LCD monitors have composite or S-Video inputs for displaying analog TV signals.

All you need is a simple VGA converter. Can be had just about anywhere online for about $40.

Could you post a link? I've done some searching and composite-to-VGA and S-video-to-VGA converters seem extremely expensive (upwards of $200).

My monitor does have DVI, but I do not think it would work with an HR20 because the Dell LCD does not support HDCP copy protection. Am I wrong?

I'm using the VIVO (video in, video out) feature of my graphics card to do this (nVidia WDM driver), along with a little program called VideoThumb 2 that shows the WDM driver output in a scalable window. My sound card has an optical audio input.

VideoThumb is a little buggy, but it works. Can anyone recommend a better way to just show the video input window?
