I've had an HR10 for about three years. It's always worked perfectly using component to my Samsung 30" tube. For Fathers' Day, my family got me a new Samsung plasma with HDMI inputs. I immediately tried hooking it up to the HR10, but all I get on the TV is a floating box that says "weak or no signal".

So, I did some research and found that the HR10, by default, won't output both component and HDMI at the same time. Unplugged the component cables from the TiVo, rebooted. Tried again. "Weak or no signal".

So, I figured it was the crappy HDMI cable that my cableco installer left a few years ago. I ordered a new one from monoprice. It just got here. I plugged it in and boom! "Weak or no signal"

Any tips on how to troubleshoot this would be welcome. I assume that either the HR10 is bad (the HDMI might have failed at any time and I wouldn't have known) or the TV is.

"Weak or no signal"That's a message I mostly remember seeing relative to OTA input. And I've had my share of HDMI problems but don't remember seeing that.

I don't mean to be insulting but are you sure you're looking at the right input?

That's a fair question, but yes, I'm sure. The big "HDMI 1" caption at the top of the screen is a dead giveaway  This particular TV only lets you switch between inputs that are connected, so currently I can switch between AV2 (the Wii), VGA (the Xbox 360), component 2 (the DVD player), and HDMI 1 (the HR10).

The big "HDMI 1" caption at the top of the screen is a dead giveawayGiven that, of course the early HR10-250s had an HDMI card that was prone to failure.

Obviously trying the receiver with other HDMI monitors would tell you pretty quickly. Hauling TVs is impractical, but taking your receiver to some other locations is someting you might want to try.

The only inexpensive repair option is www.ccscorporation.net and they may be able to help you troubleshoot.

I guess if you tried 2 different HDMI cables and neither worked I'd have to say the HDMI output on the HR10 ain't working.

Call DIRECTV and get rid of the HR10. Tell them you want to swap for the non-TiVo HR20. You won't really miss the TiVo.

I'd have to say that IMHO that is even more irresponsible than most of your posts.

How could anyone be so arrogant as to assume what would be a sufficient replacement for any particular anonymous subscriber's current platform? Please don't try to pretend that you are unaware that there is a significant number of Tivo owners who are completely appalled at the comparitive inflexibility, user-hostility, and continuing unreliability of pretty much any platform other than Tivo, as all one would have to do is spend a few minutes on this forum or others to find that out.

Your advice may be good advice for the tiny fraction of folks who may think as you do, but it is absolutely unconscionably-rotten advice for the many who may not. I Pity anyone who heeds it.

I've had a TiVo since before they were actually on the market (they sent me a review unit for the magazine I was writing for). I'm loath to give it up. I called in for a repair on my HR10, and sure enough I got the HR20. I haven't connected it yet, but I've already decided to give it a try. Having said that, the lack of suggestions is probably going to doom it in the eyes of my family.

It was just a suggestion.
Sheesh !
What's your problem ?

The HR10 won't work with the MPEG4 DIRECTV HD programming. That should be reason enough to get the HR20. It ain't a TiVo, but so what ! I've had an HR20 since October and I'm loving it.
