View Full Version : Mapping FIOS Unencrypted QAM channels - how?

Hello,

I made the plunge and took advantage of the recent price cuts and rebate. I activated my S3 yesterday and added an external eSATA drive. I currently have almost 100 hours of HD recording space and can't wait until next week for the FIOS guy to come deliver and activate my CableCards.

I have a couple of questions so indulge me a bit...

1. I have a 1TB Hitachi drive headed this way but haven't decided yet if I'll use it in the S3 eSATA external case. If I do decide to pull the 500GB drive, will the S3 automatically prepare the 1TB drive or do I need to go through jumpstart 62 again with it?

2. As I understand the CableCards, they have the encrypted QAM decoders that will allow me to see all channels on FIOS TV. When the cards are installed, I
see it needs to through the channel setup routine again. Will that undo jumpstart 62?

3. Are the 8 Steps on the CableCard Installers instructions still accurate and valid for Verizon FIOS TV ??? I have the thread in this forum discussing success also bookmarked.

4. How much of this information is lost during a power outage? I have my DLP HDTV set on UPS and will probably also have the S3 on the UPS as well but as you know, they are not perfect protection against Texas storms.

5. How do I map scanned channels to know channels in the guide? For instance, like many FIOS TV users this week, I'm waiting on the CC install. But, my TiVo S3 sees the unencrypted HD QAM channels for ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX at 71-9, 72-19, 73-41 and 74-35 respectively. How do I tell the guide to use the guide data for those channels? Is it possible?

Thanks,

Halobox

Those aren't QAM, those are OTA ATSC. Just chill out until you get your CCs.

You won't lose the external drive when you redo guided setup.

Is it possible? No can do with Tivo S3 out of the box, you will have to live with manual recordings only (no guide data) until you get your CCs installed. There's another recent thread about some experimentation with re-mapping unencrypted QAM channels to proper channel numbers with associated guide data but I don't think you want to go through that especially if you have plans for CCs anyway.

Oh come on, I want to tinker. :D

There's no such thing as OTA in this house. Everything arrives via fiber. Granted those are the OTA broadcasts being carried by the fiber but what the heck, I've got a week to tinker so I thought I'd ask.

Surely you aren't going to tell me MCE and Vista have a feature TiVo doesnt.

If it's a hassle and complicated, no. I can wait for my CableCard install.
