I'm selling one of my hr10-250 units on Ebay. A prospective buyer has asked me for the receiver id #. Am I exposing myself to any mischief by disclosing this number?

I gave mine out without any consequences. I think it is just to verify that the purchaser can activate it.

There's absolutely no harm in giving out the RID number. The buyer just needs it to check on the status of the current account with DirecTV to make sure the Tivo is free and clear.

The Buyer needs the RID Number to check and make sure No balance is owed on the Unit. Otherwise they can have a hard time trying to activate it.
It is safe to list the RID number in your Auction. that way all prospective Buyers can check up on the unit, and you will not get 100 questions asking the same thing: The RID Number.

It's also the only way that the buyer can get an access card of his own for it from D*. This way, he doesn't need to wait a week for the STB to arrive before asking for a new card and he can have both arrive simultaneously.

An excellent idea boltjames.
The Buyer can have a New Access card delivered, and be ready to activate the unit before it arrives from the Seller :D

I'm putting three up on ebay this weekend. I wondered if publishing the RID, rather than providing it to the actual buyer before payment, would allow scam artists to use my RID in their bogus auctions. Whaja think?
