View Full Version : OTA signal for H10-250 from Time Warner?

I have an HR10-250, and have tried to get OTA signals from an antenna in the attic with no luck. It works, which tells me the receiver, etc., is okay, but it doesn't work well. I'm a low-lying area about 30miles from the site with most local transmitters, so I wasn't really surprised to have reception problems.

I have Time Warner for broadband Internet, so before I go to the effort of putting up a rooftop antenna, I asked them "If I add your basic cable service, can I receive local digital stations using a television with an ATSC tuner (and without a set-top box)?" They said yes, and I ordered basic service.

The HR10-250 shows zero signal strength on any OTA channel, but the only TV I have with a digital tuner (an LG 20LS7D) does get local digital signals--it puts them in a category called CADTV (cable digital).

I think the answer is that the TV tuner works in modes (QAM?) that the HR10-250 does not, and if I want OTA signals I'm just going to have to put up a taller antenna, but is there something I'm missing? If it's the case that T-W is providing a QAM signal when I asked about ATSC, then technically their answer was incorrect, and I may cancel the basic service and ask for my money back.

I'm in Durham, NC, if it matters.

Thanks,
Heath

You don't see anything because the HR10 only uses 8VSB (ATSC). Even though the tuner has QAM capability, the tivo will never attempt to use it. What TW told you is half true... you already had their digital broadcast stations; they aren't allowed to encrypt them and they're above the signal trap for your cable modem. What they didn't say, and you didn't ask about, was the HR10 is not a digital cable receiver. If you have a Digital Cable Ready(tm) TV, then they'll show up after a channel scan. (without a cablecard to tell the tv where they are, it'll have to hunt for them.)

The only suggestion I can make... mount the antenna outside the house. Preferablly as high as possible. The HR10 has poor/no multipath rejection, so even minor reflections (trees, buildings, cars, etc.) cause problems. (The S3 connected to the same line works perfectly no matter where I aim the antenna. I even tried it face down on the floor and it worked. The HR10 loses signal lock in all directions.)
