View Full Version : Explain this....
I set up a Season Pass for "Rescue Me" since the season started last week, no repeats, save until I delete....
I go to watch it last night and there are two shows in the folder:
One titled: Rescue Me
Info: 6/13: 10:00pm FX Duration 1:04
The trials and tribulations of a New York Fire fighting crew
Nothing listed under original air date
Another one titled: Baby Face
Info: 6/13: 10:00pm FX Duration 1:05
Tommy comes under suspicion of the Beach house fire..... yada yada
Original air date: 6/13
They are the same episode,
Why would the Tivo record both shows at the same time? Apparently on different tuners, and if so - why not have identical info on it?
I checked - there is only one season pass for the show, no wishlists set up

Thats exactly why they both recorded - one had generic guide data and the other had exact guide data. The TiVo picked up both. It all relates to the guide data that the TiVo is given.
BUT why would the exact same episode at the exact same time on the exact same channel have different guide data for two recievers in the same tivo?
Your explanation is good for why it recorded, but not for why the data would be different during the exact same show.

The guide data is given to DirecTv by a 3rd party (I've seen the name mentioned in the past, but don't remember the details) so DirecTv itself has nothing to do with what is contained in the episode title or description
Since the titles and descriptions are different... they were both recorded

Could be caused by a late update to the guide data. I get it every now and then. It seems that a show is first assigned the generic guide data. The TiVo (or DTiVo in this case) sees the data and schedules the recording. Then later the guide data is updated and the show is assigned specific show information. The TiVo sees that and schedules the recording.
The TiVo will still see them as different showings because they show different guide data. As far as the TiVo knows they are different episodes.
You are missing the point - SAME EXACT TIME AND CHANNEL, they were recorded simultaneously!!!!
HOW could the data stream contain conflicting info on the exact same data????

I wasn't responding to you, you responded in between me responding to the post above yours
Best explanation yet.... but I thought the Tivo grabbed the episode information from the actual program data stream, that's why you have so much more info about a show after it has been recorded, these two versions had drastically different "Info" pages

Bingo. One contained generic information and one contained information specific to that episode.

SP grabbed the episode when it first appeared in the guide data, the one with generic info, as far as the TiVo knew, it was a new show it hadn't recorded before.
Then the guide data got updated, so the SP grabbed that one since it was a new show it hadn't recorded before.
My R10 did the same thing, I noticed it wanting to record two Rescue Me's at the same time on the same channel and cancelled the generic show, then extended the "Baby Face" one 15 minutes to make sure I got it.
It was also going to record a repeat or two later in the week, but those fixed themselves before I had to cancell them.
I guess since they were tagged as repeats, the SP killed the recordings itself.

There was only one stream of the show sent, how could two different versions?

One stream. Two sets of guide data. One older and generic, one newer and accurate.

Their scheduling algorithm obviously does not take that into account. It's really not all that hard to believe -- they probably don't have this scenario as one of their test cases (though they should).

OK possible simple terms:
Guide data HAD generic info on show, sometime later guide data got more detail information of the show but for some reason (maybe to just annoy everyone :D ) it did not update the old data and instead made new entry. Hence, 2 recordings of same show on same channel at same time.....
Chalk it up to one of those Hmmmmm moments. Better it recorded it twice than not at all.
