Has anyone put an ISO of TiVo OS 4.0 or newer on a Series 1 DTiVo? I have a Hughes GXCEBOT running TiVo OS 3.5b.01-1-031 (new update for daylight savings time). I would like to put 4.0+ on it in order to run TiVo Desktop software. I have a cachecard for ethernet connectivity. If anyone has done this, can you point me to a how-to site or thread to look at?
Thanks for any help.

If it could have worked, TiVo would have done it already;

You should ask in the underground forum, but I bet the answer is it won't work.

Series 1's run a PowerPC processor, Series 2's run a MIPS processor. Besides the fact that 4.0+ is compiled for a different processor, the other hardware like the video encoder is different as well.

This will not work.

Quick ANswer: NO. It will not work. Maharg has given some good points.

These are all good points. Thanks guys! I wonder in cross-compiling would work. If I remember correctly, TiVo Desktop is an open source program, so the code should be available. Some of it may have to be changed because of the differences in hardware.

First off, Tivo Desktop is not Open Source, neither is the Tivo OS itself.
Since we don't have the source to the Tivo OS, there is no way to cross-compile it for MIPS.

Well, technically the TiVo OS (modified Linux) is Open Source, and TiVo has the required source code on their website somewhere.
What isn't open source is the TiVoWorld App (i.e. all the important bits). So conceivably you could cross compile whatever version of linux the series 2 boxes use. (Although it may or may not have driver support for the series 1 hardware).
But you can't cross compile the TiVoWorld app, which means you'd be left with an underpowered linux box that can't record, playback, access existing recordings, doesn't have a GUI, and likely doesn't understand how to display anything on a television. Basically useless.

The Tivo OS is open Source. TivoWorld App, Tivo Desktop is not.

No, the Tivo Kernel and some utilities are Open Source. The whole OS, which includes TivoWorld, the kernel and utilities, network drivers, etc., is not.

...and what would be the point? Why not just get a Series2? They cost next to nothing.. if you want to hack, get a used one on ebay..
