My suspicions first arose after reading that lockups during playback of particular file could mean bad sectors. In mounting the drive to a Linux PC, it didn't even pass the SMART test.
Tried to save it and upgrade to bigger drive using method pointed out at bumwine, but it's taken 20 hours and only 69GB dd'ed so far, which tells me it's having a really tough time reading the bad sectors.
2 options I see:
1. run spinrite on the old drive. I'm not sure if it marks bad sectors in the master boot record or not. if so, it would get transferred to the new drive using dd.
2. Start with fresh install, but I have no idea where I can find an image.
Anyone who can help?
