View Full Version : Dolby Digital issue during FF/RW/Pause/replay/30 sec. skip

I've searched and searched, but can't seem to find any mention of this, so I thought I'd ask here. If there's a thread on this already that I missed, please point me to it.

I recently (and finally) upgraded my receiver to one that can process digital formats (specifically the new Onkyo TX-SR805). I now have my HR10 connected to the AVR using an optical cable and setup the HR10 to record in DD and output in DD. For the most part, everything works great, but when I use FF/RW/Pause/replay/30 sec. skip it takes a second or so before the audio starts to play again. I notice that when I resume normal playback that DD disappears from the display on the AVR for a moment as if the audio format had switched.

The receiver is new, so I haven't totally ruled it out as a possible cause, but I don't have this issue with DD on my DVD player which is also connected via optical or with my PS3 connected via HDMI. Additionally, I tried hooking up the HR10 to the receiver via HDMI and the result is the same as optical. If I switch the HR10 to output DD to PCM, I don't have the same issue, but obviously that's not a solution since it's not the same audio quality (at least, it's only showing up as 2 channel PCM on my AVR via optical). It's as if the HR10 stops sending the audio signal to the AVR when outputting DD.

So, is this normal for DD?

Thanks!

P.S. I'm running 6.3d

It's a function of your AV receiver. When the DD signal is lost during FF etc, the receiver reverts to some other audio mode (possibly SS). When the signal is restored it takes a second for the receiver to switch to DD. My Sony does the same thing.

Thanks for the feedback Jim. What I find odd is that my DVD player (Oppo) doesn't behave the same way. If I pause it, etc., the receiver continues to display DD and audio immediately continues when I press play. I guess the DVD player continues to output a signal, even when no audio is being played and the HR10 doesn't.

Out of curiosity, does your only do it during DD and not non-DD programs too?

My Sony does not do it (7100ES) I have it set to Optical rather than Auto.

Does your DD light go out on your AVR when you pause the DVD vs when you trick play the DVR?

Larry,

The DD light stays lit the entire time when a DVD is paused (or during FF/RW). It goes out when I trick play the DVR (or during FF/RW/replay/pause).

I have my AVR set to Optical (there is no auto for inputs on the SR805 since they're all assignable). The only other setting I've found is that I can specify that if the signal is DD, to use the DD "Listening Mode." (as opposed to THX Cinema, for example). So far, I haven't found a way to force it to stay in DD mode, though I suspect that if I do it'll mean that I have to manually change to/from DD depending on the program type.
