View Full Version : Please Wait - hangs forever

I have had my TIVO for five months without any problems. It's connected with two Moto cablecards and HDMI.

I was watching (and recording) one HDTV channel, and decided to record another at the same time. I switched tuners, selected the channel and pressed select to record. The only thing I did that was somewhat unusual was that it was a 1/2 show, and I used the option to pad it by 3 hours (I thought that this was easier than setting up a manual 3 1/2 hour recording).

All went well until I pressed "Record with these options". At that time it switched to the blue screen with "Please Wait" message. Then it just hung there. There was only one recording light on the front console (the original show that I was recording was displayed in the title). After about 20 minutes the second recording light came on, but with no title as to what was recording. The screen still said "Please Wait". It has now been 30 minutes.

Any suggestions?

OK. I just noticed that the clock on the console is frozen in time (75 minutes ago).

I decided that I might as well reboot. I did and everything seems OK now. I tried to recreate the problem, but was not able to do so.

Interesting thing is that during the 75 minute "freeze" the TIVO was still recording both shows, and both are viewable.

You know it just amazes me how great TiVo is. Here you're thinking "Oh God, what's this" and it turns out that even though it hung it still did what you wanted it to do. This is really a cool story.

Your right! Since I was watching the US Open as it was being recorded (about an hour behind live) and had just started recording the Pirate game I was hesitent to immediately reboot, but when I saw that the clock was frozen I decided that I had no choice.

It not only continued to record, but after the reboot it started to finish the recording on both shows. The only thing I missed was the ten minutes it took for the reboot.

This may sound too simple, but did you try resetting the Modem? (Unplug the Machine and Phone/Network Lines for 15 secs.) I had the same problem when trying to force a daily update, I reset the machine and then it worked fine.
Just a guess!

I don't think there was a problem with the cable modem since I was on line with my PC without problems during this time. Also, it didn't appear to be a connectivity issue, as yours did, since you were doing updates.

Hi,
Actually, it wasn't a connective issue, as I was not able to get to the screen after clicking on "Connect to Tivo now". The second I pressed the button, it just read as yours did, "Please Wait" It was not that it didn't try to connect. I just could not get there.
Usually if it's a Modem problem it goes through some of the motions until it reads "error" but here it went straight to Wait.

I also remembered after I Posted that I had a similar problem about a year ago with 1 of my machines, I don't remember which, but it gave me the same "Wait" message when I clicked on the "To Do" screen as well. Again, I reset the machine, and all was well. It may be way off, as my machines are not Networked,
I am just trying to help. It only takes a few mins. to try it. I hope that's all it is!

Thanks for the suggestion. If this happens again (which I hope it doesn't) I'll give it a try.

Tivo has to fix the "please wait" ,Tivo waits for no reason at all. For example marking a program 'do not delete', why do i have to wait ? Tivo knows what to do, just do it in background.

I agree they can do more in the background, but TiVo is doing it right in your example. Marking something "do not delete" could mean that something else might get prematurely (before it expires) deleted, and they have to warn you about that now, since they don't have any other way of making sure you get the message.
