Can I watch HDTV recordings through 480i?

I know weird question but I have a crappy tv hooked up to my S3 prior to my good tv showing up (HDTV) can I record an HDTV feed then watch it through my crappy tv downgraded to 480i? The comcast installer is coming in an hour or so and I would like to check to see if the HDTV feed is working before he leaves.

Yes, hook it up to S-video or composite output of the S3 which always put out 480i.

Can I just change the output to 480i rather than hooking up the compsite? Just asking that because I already have component hooked up.
