Never had this before. The tv was a purplish static screen but was fine just 6 hours ago. I should have taken a pic but I was so anxious to find out what was wrong I just pulled the plug. while the tivo was receiving commands from the remote, absolutely no responses showed up on the screen. Pure static. And other tivo was fine. Now that i think about it i guess it could be something with the 3x1 hdmi switcher (and i should have tried swapping inputs) but i've seen the hdmi 'flicker' before when changing inputs and it was never like this.
Upon reboot I saw all the normal screens you'd expect and tivo works fine now. Nothing was set to record overnight so I can't tell if i I missed anything

I speak for the majority of readers of this post when I say...
Huh????????
Dude, you have to get that TV out of there right away. Don't let your kids near it. It could be a gateway to hell, you just can't be certain.

This confuses me. if he was so anxious to see what was wrong why did he pull the plug? lol

I found my HR10 comatose earlier this year, no picture and wouldn't respond to the remote. I pulled the plug and it took quite awhile, but it did reset itself. But, I didn't see static that you describe, just a black screen.

i knew i should have taken a pic.....what i meant was as the unit was apparently not functioning, i didnt want to waste time trying to troubleshoot a wiring problem when, quoting Jim, I should probably just try a reboot. I didnt know if anything was scheduled to record etc and just figure that's the easiest fix to try
just picture old fashioned snow on a tv like on your 1950s tv when there was no antenna hooked up and you got nothing but static. Then imagine the static being shaded with a hue of purple.

Generally, I have to say that it is amazing that when something weird happens to people's TV enjoyment they seem to fault the TiVo first. Why is that.

Were the LEDs on the front still responding the remote? If it crashes or locks up, they won't flash. I assume you tried changing channels, going to tivo central, etc. It would also have been telling to go to Standby. (TC, page down, select... or "power" via a slingbox.)
If it wasn't crashed, it might have been an error with HDMI output. Usually that's the fault of the cable, but the HDMI cards of HR10's are known die. It's easily replaced for ~$50.
I've seen this sort of behavior with my computer monitor... re-plug the DVI cable and it works again. My plasma TV is "DVI" (pioneer runs other things over that cable) and does Weird Things(tm) when that cable isn't perfectly attached. (Of course, the media converter will lock up if I change HD resolutions too fast.)
[BTW, the slingbox "power" button with code 0 is a handy thing... I can shut off a room full of tivos like that. I don't recall tivo ever making a remote with a sleep button on it.]

ur sig is forever in my brain...rebooting solves all :)

I remember seeing that sort of behavior when my hdmi card crapped out about a year ago.

One of my tv's does this occasionally, the one hooked up via hdmi. It's my understanding that when the TV is turned on, there's some sort of digital handshake going on between the hr10-250 and the TV to secure the hdmi channel. I find turning the tv off and back on, to force a renegotiate, works fine.
I've also noticed it seems to happen if I turn the TV on, and the wife gets impatient and hits the Tivo button on the remote before the TV is fully up, that seems to screw up the handshake. My two cents anyway.
Seems that the same thing has happened to me. Wife calls this morning saying that there is no picture, just static. All other inputs work fine. Using HDMI as well. Will have to try the unplug method. First time this has happened. We did lose power very briefly last night, might have something to do with it.

Not sure if it's the same thing but . . .
Last night, I was reconnecting my tivo after moving some components around and I got the same thing (power was off and back on). I first thought I got some component wires crossed (not using hdmi). I checked and replugged all connections to no avail. I also checked at the projector. Nothing. Finally, I cycled thru the resolutions on the tivo front panel and it immediately recovered. Again, could be a different problem, but certainly worth trying if you get it again - much faster and easier than rebooting.

This is the closest thread I could find for my problem. My screen goes all snowy, but just white snowy, not tinted like the OP's. This seems to happen only when I play a recorded program, and only sometimes. My husband and I have guessed that the seeming randomness may be due to it happening only when the program we start watching is a different resolution from the one we had watched previously, but that is just a guess.
Many times, backing out of the program (pressing the left button) will bring back the screen within about 5 sec. Other times, I have to back out repeatedly or go back and forth between the menu screen and playing the recording. My husband prefers to change the receiver's input to the Xbox 360 and back to the TiVo. Sometimes that has to be done more than once as well.
My biggest concern, aside from the annoyance, is to find out if anything might be seriously wrong with my TiVo, TV, or receiver. (I doubt it's the receiver or TV because we've never seen the problem when not using the TiVo, but not completely sure how to test because the Xbox 360, Xbox, and DVD player don't ever change resolutions during use, that I know of.) I also suspect this is HDMI-related but don't really want to give up HDMI.
Here's some info about the configuration. Let me know if you need more:
TiVo: S3
TV: Sony KDS-60A2000 (60" SXRD)
receiver: Sony STR-DA5200ES
Everything in my system (the rest is an Xbox 360, an original Xbox, and a Sony DVD jukebox) goes thru the receiver, which is HDMI to the TV. The TiVo is hooked to the receiver via HDMI as well. The Xboxes and DVD jukebox are all hooked to the receiver via component and some form of digital audio cable (optical for the Xboxes, coax for the DVD jukebox).
For testing purposes, I may be able to replace both HDMI cables with component (but am not sure I have any remaining component inputs on the receiver, and one component cable may not be long enough for either the receiver to TV or TiVo to receiver), but I only have one spare HDMI cable. What are my best steps for testing?
Thanks,
Kira

Next time try to just change inputs on your TV. Meaning, cycle through all your inputs you have on your TV remote until you come back to the one you started with. Rebooting was not necessary for me since I've seen that screen you were talking about a few times. It's rare and only happens when you turn on your TV.
