A primary reason I will stick with Tivo rather than DirecTV (assuming that I will onday be forced to choose) is that I love suggestions. They aren't very helpful during sweep weeks when there is more good TV than I can watch, but I'm always impressed with at least a few of the shows that it finds during slow periods like now.
Plus, playing with the Suggestions Engine is a kick. I've watched it mature since the old 14-hour Tivo version - it still has a mind of its own but it's much more, well, suggestible. The original version would record every episode of a Roseanne marathon routinely but ignore shows I had given three thumbs to. The new version is pretty intelligent.
I'm always surprised that there are people who get indignant about suggestions. For me it's another kind of wishlist - for them it's a sign of weakness. Having suggestions record is all positive ROI (Positives - it might find a show I'd like and didn't know about. Negatives - see below)
Here are my top 5 reasons why people hate suggestions:
5) They are pretty sure that the one time that year they'll have a girl in their house, Tivo will ask to switch channels to record something from the Spice Channel
4) There's no room anyway, what with every episode ever of Battlestar, Lost and Enterprise Kept Until Delete
3) It's hard to stay "latent" when the Tivo keeps recording Martha Stewart
2) Since they have the guide data memorized anyway, why not just record it manually?
1) It's one more reason to feel superior
