I wanna trade out one of my series 1's (monthly sub, msd pricing) for a new series 3. $400 after rebate is my jumping point.

As I read it in the rebate link, (http://store.tivocommunity.com/rebates/s3_fathers_day_rebate.pdf) "New Tivo Service () activation required", which I take it to mean that I can't get the rebate if I just replace an existing box, correct?

As the rebate expiry is approaching, I just wanted to check to make sure.

Can I get the rebate or am I out of luck so far?

You can definitely get the rebate. You are activating a new Tivo so you qualify - I have confirmed this with Tivo as my S3 is on the way as well.

You get the rebate by activating it with new service. If you want to replace an older montly TiVo and retain its pricing plan, you must forfeit the rebate.

Now, if you commit to 3 years monthly service, you can get the rebate, and essentially pay the same MSD rate you were paying.

OK, one "Yay" and one "Nay" so far.....

Should I have made a poll?

Had a long phone call with TiVo yesterday as I activated my new Series 3, with similar question.

I have
1 lifetime Series 2
2 monthly Series 2 on MSD

Just got new S3 to replace one of the monthly S2's, which will be retired.

By activating a NEW service line on the S3, and doing the 3 year commitment, I have a monthly service charge for the S3 of $6.95, and I will get the $200 rebate.

Then, after all of that is done, I cancelled the monthly subscription on 1 of my S2's that I am not under any service contracts or obligations for. I assume you are not under contract on the S1, just paying month-by-month.

Thus, consider $7 / month * 36 months = $252, - the $200 rebate = $52 for 3 years of service on a retail purchased ($600) TiVo S3. That was the jumping point for me.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys! I think I get it now.

Although I planed on keeping the thing for at least three years, I've still got the willies about making a three year commitment. (I haven't had to talk to their call center for years!)

With one box at $12.95 a month and three more at $6.95 a month happily grandfathered in with no commitment at all, I'm ascared to making any changes that I can't do online.

Looks like my irrational fears will keep me from jumpin' on this one.

Well, since you have no commitments on the other ones (and you would still have 3 of them after replacing the one with the S3), you could easily do this and then if you ever wanted to keep one of the boxes and stop using one, you could just stop the service on it and if it was the S3 you wanted to stop using you would just cancel service on the other "monthly" unit and transfer the service from the S3 to another unit.

Sure, you would end up with one box with a 3 year commitment (but how likely is it that you have 4 units now and you wouldn't want to keep at least 2 for the next 3 years). You would be paying the lowest price for 3 years, and once that time was up you could go month to month again (and at $6.95 for the Multi Service Discount price) or sign up for another contract (1-3 yrs) and it would be for $6.95 as well as it would still qualify for MSD price as long as Tivo keeps that around (and there are so many people that have this and for several units per home that I can't see them stopping it, their business would be cut in half).

So you would still have some wiggle room with changes in the future, and you are likely to keep at least 2 units with service anyways. Also, when your "contract" is up after your 3 yr period, you get the lower of the 2 prices (what it was then or what it goes for now, and goes by what 1-3 yr contract you had), whether you do another contract or just go monthly.

So since the current 3 yr contract is $12.95 monthly without considering MSD, in 3 years you could easily be back at a $12.95/mo price plan (or do another 3 yrs for $12.95/mo) and will most likely be able to still keep doing the $6.95 MSD price for it (and your other "extra" units).

You really wouldn't be giving up anything other than needing at least one box on the service for that contract plan (you could even transfer that service back to your S1 you want to retire if needed).

Prepaying a new 3-year service for $299 and dropping a $12.95/month service would save you $12.95 - $8.31 = $4.64 per month.
