Programming only new shows

Is there a way you can program your tivo to record only new episodes of one show. For instance I want to record new episodes of The Shield, but when I get a season's pass it also records all episodes from last year.

Also how can I find out why an episode did not record?

Also how can I find out why an episode did not record?At the top of the To Do List is where the Recording History can be selected.
