I need to ask a question.

Hypothetically, if a miracle occurred and DirecTV fell back in love with Tivo, could Tivo software be developed to load onto a HR20? Then could HR20s be upgraded to become Tivo DVRs that support MPEG-4????? Or is there a hardware limitation?

Your guess is as good as ours. Theoretically it could be done but how much time would it take to port vs devloping a new box based on existing TiVo hardware designs.

It will never happen, at least not on the HR20.

Just out of curiosity, what makes you say that? With Liberty buying D* from Murdoch, and with the reports that Liberty likes Tivo, isn't this a possibility? Tivo is already providing software for some existing Comcast cable boxes, subsequent to Comcast's agreement with Tivo. The Liberty could make the same type of deal with Tivo for the HR20.

This is an interesting question that should be asked here. :)

Is that fact based on chip architecture or speculation based on the current D*/TiVo relationship.

The HR20 architecture. It would be much much more likely that Tivo would want it's own hardware platform -- either developed by itself under license to DirecTV, or developed cooperatively with DirecTV. We can dream, though :)
