I guess I knew this was coming from spoilers but it was so darn unnecessary...Carson is one the best developed characters in a show full of two-dimensional people...

why not kill-off Tayla? she's useless...

the speech at the end was awful too...but I guess I'm just in a bad mood because I liked Carson...

Ugh, that sucked! I agree, he was definitely one of the most interesting characters in a cast of clones.

Absolutely. Shame to see him go. Carson was a good, solid consistent character on the show. What a shame.

Did anyone hear a rumor that he's "not really dead" and will be seen again, that it's all part of a plan the writer's have?

I hate that they killed Carson. I'd would have rather them have killed off Rodney. I can't stand Rodney.

I read the spoilers and have been wondering when it would happen.

What I've heard is that it's not so much a plan as an escape clause. With Samantha Carter coming on board next season, they will have a surplus of geek characters, and I can see where they would want to cut back. But from what she's said about being moved to Atlantis to fill out her Stargate contract, I suspect there's very little chance she'll be there more than a year, and they've said they have a way to bring Carson back should they so desire.

WOW!!! what a ending for the dr. I hate seeing him go.

Sherminator

I think that he ascended, as he gave his life to save the nurse's, plus through out the show he has been shown favoring life in disregard to his safety or the morals of those around him, I also feel that it wasn't just a figment of Rodney's imagination at the end.

But why Carson couldn't have just evacuated the infirmary immediately (I know that Watson would have been in a very tender stage of recovery), and risk the room rather than people.

Anubys
06-02-2007, 09:45 AM
I hope it's not ascension...plenty of heroes die valiantly every day, that should not be the ticket to ascension...

I just don't see how Sam will replace Carson, she's not a medical doctor...I could see Zalenka being taken out...

I kept up with Atlantis on the "Canadian schedule" although I'm watching the last eps of SG-1 on Sci-Fi as they air, so I first saw the episode a few months ago. I didn't watch the whole episode straight through last night, but I did watch the final 10 or so minutes and it still brought a tear to my eye. I'll miss Carson.

Did anyone hear a rumor that he's "not really dead" and will be seen again, that it's all part of a plan the writer's have?

Caution, spoilers below:

It's not a rumor. Producer/writer Joseph Mallozzi keeps a blog and he often drops tidbits about what's coming up. He's referred to Paul McGillion's return several times. Carson will be returning for the midseason two-parter.

Mallozzi also did an interview with the Save Carson Beckett site that sheds a little more light on his return.

If you're not a spoilerphobe, I recommend Mallozzi's poem from his April 25th post that hints at various episodes from the back half of season 3 and roughly the first half of season 4.

Edited: I don't know if it's because I've visited the links, or if it's because of the forum software linking URLs, but I reedited my post to remove the direct links in the spoiler area because they weren't showing up spoilerized. PM me if you need the links to those sites, or just Google based on the info provided.

I shed a few tears at the end, too....I was shocked they'd get rid of such a great character! (I still haven't really warmed up to Tayla yet, either)

I had no idea Sam was coming to Atlantis...can you imagine the show with Sam AND McKay?? I'll have to study up on my astrophysics cause I'll be totally LOST with all the techno-babble!!

Were there "Through the Gate" Contest Winners in this episode? The guy that was hitting on Dr. Weir, the two scientists (one blew up, one almost did), and they guy playing chess with Zelenka struck me as being very "amateur." They looked like people that were encouraged by friends to be actors, but didn't quite work on camera. ;)

I hate Rodney. If that selfish chump had gone fishing Carson would still be alive.

I hope it was the actor's desire to leave and the writers didn't kill him off for shock value.

I practically had to nail my right hand to the coffee table to keep from FFwd'ing through the first 30+ minutes.

At least the writers acknowledged the lunacy of Rodney always pressing buttons, pulling levers and just plain messing with advanced alien stuff without reading the instructions.

Contest winners probably won't get any on-screen lines because they're not in the SAG.

Actually, I believe the first one is a freebie. I know it is for writers...in fact, you basically can't get into the Writer's Guild without a credit. But you can't get a second credit without being in the Writer's Guild.

They killed off one of my two favorite SG:A characters. :(

I can only hope the rumors are right and Beckett can return. Even so, I take heart in the conversation with "ghost" Beckett and Rodney: It's a big universe so maybe they'll see each other again. (I took that as a hint that Paul McGillion could maybe come back a s a different character ...)

Anyway, some important things I didn't see discussed:

Who was Teyla referring to so shyly that prompted Dr. Houston to say she could drop some hints? At first, I thought Ronon. Then I thought it was Sheppard. Finally, I thought maybe (slim possibility) Teyla was talking about Rodney, especially after she hesitated later on before the memorial, saying how much she would miss him. After the show was over, I'm clueless again.

How funny was when Sheppard asked Ronon if he was dating, Ronon responded, "Like a woman?" and Sheppard came back with, "or a man." Too funny!

Lastly, Dr. Weir's lunch date. I fully expected her date to be killed, since he was introduced in a flashback AFTER we already knew there'd be an explosion, so it was a nice surprise that he survived. Weir said she didn't want to be involved, for one reason, because it would "split her focus". Given all the spoilers about casting changes ... (some of which were untagged above) ...Could this be part of a long term plot to give Weir a reason to voluntarily leave Atlantis? I'm thinking maybe she falls in love and the guy is recalled to Earth. Weir chooses to be with him, so she leaves Atlantis just as Carter arrives.

Or of course, Weir could be killed or fired. :)

Oh yeah ... very guest-heavy episode tonight! We even got to see Major Lorne painting. That's one talented team they got there.

I don't think it was any of the obvious choices. Given the way they suddenly made her seem nervous around Ronin and Sheppard, they are trying to keep you guessing. After seeing her reaction to Beckett's death, and their interaction when she was on the table, I think it was Beckett.

Anyone with me?

I heard that Jewel Staite (Kaylee from Firefly) will be Dr. Beckett's replacement. Say what you will about Carson but I'd much rather look at her than him. I hadn't heard that Carter was only staying for a year. I guess I should have expected it though.

Looks like I'm going againsts the grain here...

I hated the Carsen character even worse than Rodney, if that's even possible so I am absolutely thrilled he is "dead".

In fact, they need a major reset, the only characters I do like from the show are Sheperd, Ronin, and Tayla (sometimes - usually when she is fighting with those sticks) :) Oh wait, I like that ascended lady that protects her one planet too. :p

I think I'll find more agreement by stating this episode just totally sucked (except for my first point).

It also seemed like a good opportunity for Sheppard to mouth off something like "its not like we can enforce Don't Ask, Don't Tell here" or even "It's not like we would kick you out for being gay."

I'd like Rodney I think, if he grew as a character, there have been a few episodes where he's recognized his attitude and demeanor offputs others or causes problems. But come later episode, same old cocky Rodney not listening to others and causing harm to himself or others because of it.

And why some others don't just shut him down or smack him from time to time is beyond me.

I really don't think he has. As has been pointed out, every once in a while he has a "growth" episode where he seems to learn a lesson, but then the next week he's right back where he started.

I don't know if the fault lies with the writers, or if Hewlett just isn't capable of going beyond one note, but for me the character has grown increasingly tiresome. I only hope Sam can slap a little sense into him (i.e., that it's the writers and not Hewlett).
