View Full Version : Universal remotes and the Panasonic 'PX600 TVs

I have a Panasonic -37PX600B TV and I am struggling to get my head around how I'd configure a universal remote to work with it

The problem is this:

To watch Tivo, I have to hit the following buttons

1. Hold an analog TV button (like "1") down for a few seconds - This turns the TV on from standby
2. Now I need to switch to an AV input by pressing the TV/AV button
3. Now I need to select WHICH AV input - and this is the tricky bit:
- When I press TV/AV it shows me the AV input that was selected last time. It also shows me four options to choose with the teletext coloured keys. One of these is always "next" or "previous" as there are more inputs than colours. SO, my Tivo (on AV3) is not guaranteed to always be the same coloured button. AND if AV3 is already selected, hitting the AV3 coloured button again toggles between AV3/RGB and AV3/SVHS, which doesn't do a lot for the picture

So, there is no guarateed series of keystrokes to turn on the TV and select the Tivo input (unless I have missed something)

Any other 'PX600 owners out there with suggestions/solutions?

Well I turn my tv on with the On button on the front of it and it then defaults to selecting Scart socket 2 for the Tivo.

My Scart 2 is the only one that auto switches to the incoming source when the tv is turned on if there is a live source attached there. Are you sure you aren't feeding your Tivo in the wrong Scart socket on your tv and that it doesn't have the same auto selection capabilities when switched on as mine.

Do you have the same (or similar) model TV?

What you say would work, but only for Tivo watching - I need a solution which would also work with (say) live Sky watching on AV1 or Humax watching on AV3 or DVD watching on Component. The UI for these Panasonics just doesn't seem to lend itself to automation

In the menu options on your TV you can set up which output is the default when the TV is powered on.

I have my panasonics set to power on straight to AV as Tivo rules :)

I assume that means a real power on (with the on/off switch) not an on from standby?

I too have a Panny (not that model). I have TiVo on AV1, Freeview on TiVo's Aux Scart, DVD on TiVo's VCR scart and PS2 on the telly's AV2.

On the Telly's menu I've set it to default to AV1 when switched on which it turns to from both standby and the on/off switch. HOWEVER, it only does it if the TiVo is already switched on (i.e. not in standby).

And why exactly would anyone ever put their Tivo in Standby as it saves no power or hard drive wear.

I may want the telly on the basic 5 channels and not the TiVo when I switch on
LEDs bug me
Last remote in my hand was the TiVo one which switches off the telly and the TiVo
Mild-anarchic tendencies
Why not, it's my AV setup, not yours, so ner...

Tivo can start recording suggestions immediately in standby mode,
instead of waiting for 30mins without a keypress in normal mode.

It releases the SCART control, so another device can switch in to the TV,
and the TV will auto switch to tivo's scart when tivo comes out of standby.

It turns the tv off if you point it at the tv and you have set the remote up for volume etc

Tivo also remembers if it was in standby at mains power-off, and restarts in standby.

If it did spin the drive down, you would lose the live-buffer, and it would take 5-10 seconds to spin-up and come out of standby (as v+ does when "resting").

One of these is always "next" or "previous" as there are more inputs than colours.

So getting the remote to send "next next previous previous", wouldn't guarantee a known state?

Maybe you could use the AV button in the remote sequence to avoid switching to SHVS:

E.g. send AV + red (which is previous or av1) then av + red again?

Wouldn't that end up on AV1 ?

What sort of universal remote do you have? I'd recommend a Harmony remote as they've been designed to support the Panasonic menu system. They remember which input you last used, and then cycle through the menu the right number of times.

Thanks to both Mike and Prat (that NEVER sounds right does it:)) - I'll look into the Harmonys, but the idea of using the AV button to "fool" the TV into getting into a known state might be a good start too

Cheers guys
