Two questions:

1) does the S3 denote HD programs as such in the on-screen grid guide (as the HR10-250 did)?

If the answer to 1) is yes, then
2) how is an HD program denoted as such? Through the Showing Bits? Through a specific HDTV Genre (as was the case with the HR10-250)? In some other way?

There's an "HD" icon next to each program listed that is in HD.

1) The S3 denotes HD programs as such in the grid-style guide.

2) In the guide, there is a "HD" logo next to the program title.

The new 8.3 software added the HDTV wishlist category you had on the HR10-250. You can do searches and only list programs in HD; you can also choose to auto-record programs meeting criteria you define only if they are broadcast in HD.

Yes, you get a little black box with the letters [HD] for HD programs in the grid guide. In the non-grid guide I'm not sure you get anything beyond the HD in the program information (HD,CC,Stereo), etc...

You can also filter the guide so that it shows HD programming only. In this case, it only displays channels that have HD programming in the currently viewed window (channels with no HD are not listed at all), and all non-HD shows are grayed out as to emphasize the HD ones.

The filter may be new in 8.3, so it may not be present on a brand new S3 until it has updated it's software, gotten new guide data, and indexed it.

In some other way?As you scroll through the on-screen guide, the description of the currently selected entry will say whether that program is in high-definition in a little set of attributes in parenthesis at the end: "(HD,CC,Stereo,R)" = High Definitioon, Closed-Captioned, Stereo Sound (minimum), Repeat.

The guide has long had a filter option that you could turn on to highlight things that currently interest you. You specify a program genre (Sports, Movies, Documentaries, etc) and optional subgenre (Movies/Action Adventure) and it displays things that aren't in the selected genre/subgenre in less bright text; everything that matches the genre/subgenre appears to be highlighted. In recent firmware versions they've added "HD" as a genre, with one possible layer of subgenre (you can specify "HD/Movies" but not "HD/Movies/Action Adventure"). They also added "HD" as a genre in title searches and Wishlists (I think--I don't use Wishlists).

EDIT: Hmmm. I never use the grid-guide because when I first tried it it seemed pretty sluggish. It seems faster now--I think that I'll try it for a while. (Note that things that don't match the current filter on the grid are displayed on a charcoal gray background as opposed to the normal bright-blue which de-emphasizes them even more than the lighter text used in the traditional TiVo overlay guide).
