View Full Version : Analog scan line at the top of the screen?

This is probably not a S3 issue, but I figured I'd ask anyway. Believe it or not, my son's friend through a Wii controller through my Samsung 32 inch LCD (that's a another story).

Anyway, I replaced it with a Westinghouse 32 LCD and now have an issue with my analog picture from the S3. This did not happen with the Samsung, but at the top of the screen when watching an analog signal I see a white line that flickers. This is a very thin line that flickers white and pretty annoying. It also doesn't appear on HD channels. It looks like maybe I'm seing too much of the signal or the screen is too low. I'm connected via HDMI. There doesn't seem to be a setting to adjust the screen up/down but there is a setting of +10% screen which removes this line, but it also +10% screen on the HD channels, which seems like I'm missing something.

Anybody seen this before?

Yep, the westys don't do any overscan at all. This is nice for 1080i content, because it's per-pixel accurate. But you'll see scanlines.

It actually shows up in HD content too, usually on the left side. It generally doesn't bother me on HD content as the line is very thin, and I just use the TV's zoom for SD. I find this closely approximates normal overscan so I don't miss anything anyway.

Some TVs don't overscan on DVI/HDMI inputs. Perhaps try component input(s) instead. Could well be as stated above the TV doesn't overscan period, but it's worth a try...

So this is normal for Westinghouse LCD's? That's what it sounds like.

Yes, it is normal.

I see this if I use native resolution for my output (HP PL4260 Plasma display connected via HDMI). If I force the TiVo's output resolution to 720p or 1080i, all is well, so that's what I've done.

I've tried forcing different resolutions and it doesn't seem to help. Either the Tivo menu/ or SD channel looks sqeezed in.

I did a Google search and have found that the 0% overscan for the westinghouse may be for HDMI only. A site mentioned that a component connection will have 5% overscan. I may try this when I get home.

Thanks
