How can so many people want a Media Center PC?

400 people is hardly so many people. And remember these are people who read Gizmodo, so it is hardly a relevant cross-section of the general public. And these internet polls are never very good statistical representations of anything.

Personally, I know of at least six households with Tivo's. And three more with company cable DVR's (one of them is a HD-DVR in a Series2 home). But I don't know anybody with a Media Center PC that is used as a DVR.

I take away from that poll confirmation that they moved some units at $499 (http://hdtivo.wordpress.com/2007/05/27/tivo-gets-realistic-about-s3-price/) last month and will move a decent number now at $399. Plus there's still plenty to sell @ $299. ;)

I had a microsoft powered DVR, the Dishplayer. That cured me. It has been TiVo ever since.

marketing ability- MS somehow has it (world dominance some how helps you there- LOL)- Tivo doesn't seem to.

(but I think the new antenna commericals are pretty good to tell you the truth)

Well the main benifit i see is you've got one stop shopping. You can game, surf the web, record tv, burn your recordings and add virtually unlimited space. For me, thats more appealing than just being able to record tv.

I wonder if it's all about marriage? My friend with the MCE can't do anything but watch TV in the evenings with the wife home. No gaming, no surfing. Though I guess the idea is that he's supposed to get a MCE in the office with an XBOX 360 extender in the living room, right? But then I wonder whether his gaming experience will be lagged because his wife is streaming video to the living room?

Try looking at it this way...

I have to buy a PC to be able to read email and surf the net. If it also happens to function as a DVR all the better.

But if I spend my money on an S3 then I can't read email, surf the net, etc.

I doubt there are any S3 owners out there that don't also own a PC. Once media center is included for free on PC's, everyone can say they have a media center. Even if they didn't want one.
