View Full Version : Is it defective or normal?

Not sure if I should return my S3 or not. I have two issues:

1) Occasionally, when I change channels, I get a loud pop from my speakers. Wouldn't be such a big deal, but I run all my audio through my HT setup so when the sound is up, the pop is really loud. Almost to the point that you wonder if it is damaging the speakers.

2) When changing channels of different resolutions, I get a fair amount of snow and other lines on the screen for about a second while changing the channel. I believe this is normal handshaking with hdmi, but not sure. Is everyone seeing this?

I had my tv calibrated recently and these symptoms seemed to start after that, but I could be wrong. Can't see how calibrating the tv could affect the tivo.

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Set the output to fixed resolution and then your TV won't have to do the conversion each time you change the channel.

Is there any downside to this approach? Is it better to let the tivo do the upconverting or let my sony sxrd do it? It's capable of 1080p. Or is it best to watch in the native format.

Will your suggestion also eliminate the pop sound I was referring to?

Thanks.

i use 1080i fixed and I have a 1080p TV. No downsides that I know of. The popping may have to do with the conversion, but I don't know. Try it and see what happens.

The downside is that you'll be watching a 720p source at 1080i - supposedly for sports or other fast action type things, that's supposed to make a difference.

You must have to have eyes like a hark to see the difference, because I sure can't.

The pop sounds like your receiver switching between a PCM and DD 5.1 output. You can confirm this by going into the audio settings and forcing PCM only. Of course, then you lose the goodness of DD 5.1, but it'll at least let you know if that's what the issue is.

Interesting. Let me make sure I got that right. fast action 720P can actually look WORSE when upconverted to 1080i? Hmmmm. I think I heard that about xbox too.

Good point on the poping noise. I'll try that and report.

Thanks for the help guys!

Sorry, we got our wires crossed there - 720p is supposed to look better for fast action. if you run 1080i fixed, you'll miss out on that.

In my experience, you won't be missing anything.
