I think I've got a bad hard drive. Hung for 29 hrs on clear and delete. I'm trying to restore the backup file that was made when I upgraded this drive 3 years ago. Tried using mfstools but doesn't work. Says file name not there. I booted up in windows and checked the drive and a tivo file is there named tivobackup-12-01-04_20_24.mfs This file name or several iterations don't work with mfsrestore command.
This seems like a simple task I'm trying to accomplish but I have spent hours on it.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Bootup your PC with the diagnostic CD that shipped with your hard drive and run the disk utility to check for errors.

Ran the disk diagnotic and it showed errors.
Any suggestions on how to restore the image?

do you use tab completion to get the filename? did you try enclosing in quotes? can you "see" the file when mounted in linux?

If they were SMART errors - then the hard drive is toast. Time to shop for a new one.

Did you try copying the backup from the drive that it is on to a different drive? Will windows allow you to copy it at all?

If you can't copy it off of that drive, then you will probably need to find another backup image.
