Is it possible to transfer previously recorded programs from my old s2 to a new s3?
How about settings such as season pass and "thumb" ratings?

1. Not currently. Probably some day. Hopefully "soon".
2. No, those must be re-entered manually.

This is an area that is ripe for a enhancement. Tivo should have a backup and restore for configurations, suggestions, etc. This will especially useful as they start to support the Comcast DVR and its a rental model. People may start replacing for support, upgrade, or move reasons.
I dont necessarily see transferring shows but certainly all the seasons passes, thumbs up, wishlists, and the like should be fast and easy to do and an be stored in a Tivo server where your DVR preferences are stored.

If you "opt-in" for your privacy setting (understandably required) as part of KidZone and/or GuruGuides (and/or swivel search??) and then sometime later replace your TiVo, several people here have discovered your SPs and Wishlists get automatically restored to your new machine after a couple of calls.
I would expect something from TiVo about this pretty soon: I think your "Comcast DVR" is a good guess as to why it's happening, and why the announcement is being delayed. Comcast undoubtedly has to sign off on its final form for the Comcast DVRs, and TiVo wants the feature for the rest of us to be the same. If this is so, we should see an announcement soon; public deployment of the Comcast TiVo is presently planned to start in June.

The stored info is on a per TSN basis, so it will only save/restore the data to a particular TiVo. If you replace the hard drive, it will restore. If you replace the TiVo (swap it out), it won't. I don't see TiVo changing that any time soon.
While having the ability to transfer settings to a new TiVo would be a neat enhancement, it would most likeky only be done once in the life of the TiVo which means it would probably be seen by TiVo as a waste of time to add that feature.

Not when it comes to a rental model. People can move, upgrade to HD, or newer models, or replace bad units frequently.
I can see comcast using that as a marketing point against DTV.
Look at Cell phones, could you imagine the cellular providers having no backup /restore solution for contacts when you upgrade phones. Now granted it isnt perfect but they do do it.

I only transfer data from an old computer to a brand new computer once during the lifetime of the unit, but both Apple and Microsoft write user account transfer programs into their operating systems. TiVo needs to do the same thing.
