I finally went from my analog cable (don't laugh, its free) to analog + a Tivo Dual Tuner (free again, and I don't mind the monthly service fee). Yep, even my 32" non HD TV was free.

I noticed 2 immediate problems.

1) I only liked High or Best Quality recordings
2) Best Quality was good for < 20 hours of storage, and I love to record a variety, since I never know what I am in the mood for :)

So, I bought a Seagate 750gb drive (yep, at $190 I am pissed to spend that cash) and used the Hinsdale How-To to copy the 80gb drive over to the new 750gb drive.

One command, 5 hours to copy (I ran it overnight), 5 minutes to reassemble in the morning, and now it can handle 231 hours of Best Quality recordings.

Very easy. Gotta say thanks to everyone who posts these kinds of things to help the rest of us out. Now the ability to record 2 shows and watch a 3rd is actually worth something since I can ignore storage issues.

I don't want to rain on your success, but feel I must mention: hinsdale's guide is woefully out of date, and I just wanted to make sure you knew to use a larger cluster size (-r 4) for the expanded partition (required for drives > 250gb or so.

mfsbackup -Tao - /dev/hdc | mfsrestore -r 4 -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hda /dev/hdb

It said it was updated March 2k7 - looks like it recorded 41 hours at Best Quality while I was on vacation - don't know how I will keep up actually

I stand corrected... guess I should have said "last time I looked at it, Hinsdale's was outdated"
