View Full Version : What speed should I be expecting....
When doing a mfs_ftp upload or download from a tivo to my computer? When uploading and downloading using smartftp I'm only seeing about 1.8mb/s on a 100mbit wired connection (cat5e). Is that normal? Is the bottleneck my tivo or are there settings I can change to make the Tivo transfer quicker?

Upload speeds are always going to be slower. Backport usb drivers can speed up transfers, as well as tuning the dvr to non-existant or music channels or even putting in standby during the transfer. Or, if you want to take it further, you could monte to a custom kernel with the netfilter code stripped out to speed things up a bit. I typically get about ~1.8 mb/s inserts and around ~3.0 mb/s downloads with Smartftp and mfs_ftp using backport usb modules and a custom 8.1 kernel. Sometimes even faster than that depending on what else is going on on my network.

Although there's not a whole lot you can do with the file, the Series3 seems to have some pretty good speeds. I've gotten usually around 7-8MBps.
Da_Goon, that is exactly what I'm seeing also during inserts, haven't yet clocked a download from the Tivo. I'm using backport drivers, but just a regular 6.3b kernel. Oh well guess there's nothing else I can do about it.

You could try a custom kernel too. Jamie posted some custom 8.1 kernels (the one I'm using with my HR10) and AW posted some init framework in cheer's 6.3 collected tips thread (at the other forum) that includes a check.sh file to use to chainload the kernel. Might help a little bit.

Nice. Now if only I had a Series 3, cable, and enough knowledge to crack the new tystream code.
