Upgrade software

Bought an old directv tivo off ebay for a spare. It came with software version 3.1 which of course can not be zippered.

I tried to upgrade software with out activating by making the phone call as I only want it for a spare and use it to transfer programs to. Do I have a bad modem or can the software not be upgraded with out the tivo being active?

I think the TiVo needs activated. You could manually upgrade with slices though.

Or just start with a fresh 6.2a image.

If it is doesn't have a large drive you might want to upgrade that while you re image.

I've done several software upgrades via phoning in without having the units activated. Unless something has changed, that should still work. MGMRick, does it tell you the phone calls are successful?

No it says phone was not successful. It will not even let me connect using the phone number already programmed in or change the phone number.

Not a big deal I will just get a hold of 6.2 and go that way.

Just was not sure if that meant the modem was bad...but that does not matter either
