What is the proper procedure for powering down the S3 assuming nothing is being recorded or downloaded at the moment?
1. Just pull the plug.
2. Set to standby and pull the plug.
3. .357 through the power supply.
4. Other - please describe.
Thanks

#1 is all you need to do. Standy doesn't power down the hard drive, so there is no need to do that first. Just make sure you wait a few seconds for the hard drive to spin down after you unplug it. Then it should be safe to move.

If you really want to be paranoid, go to Messages and Settings, Restart the Recorder and select Restart the Recorder. When the screen goes black, pull the plug.

I repeatedly noticed arcing/sparking whenever I was plugging my TiVo back in after unplugging it. This was true either at the wall or at the cable connector on the back of the box.
So I keep my TiVos plugged into multi-outlet strips now so that I can turn them on/off with a real power switch.
I have also found that I never really ever turn them off. If I think they need to reboot, I choose the Restart option from the menu. LOL
