You can't.

If you're trying to do with without a cable box, then VOD is not available. If you have the Tivo connected with a cable box, then all you need to do is turn to channel 1 and use your cable box's remote.

If it's already 'on demand' courtesy of your cable company, why put it on tivo? I don't even bother tivo-ing shows that I know are going to be on-demand, why waste space?

Indeed, you cannot get VOD on your TiVo. This is one of the main down-sides of the TiVo option.
efilippi: In terms of why the OP might want to do this, I can imagine wanting to be able to do so, because FF and REW work better when the content is local.

Actually VOD IS coming to DirecTV, via the HR20 HD DVR. The HR20 can be hooked up to your broadband network and the shows will come to you that way. Here's one quote about it:
"Food Network and Discovery Channel are among more than a dozen programming services that are expected to be available when the big satellite broadcaster launches its new on-demand service in July, according to DirecTV."
There are reports that beta testing is already well underway.
